Mireille Chinain
Mireille Chinain is a marine scientist from French Polynesia. Life Chinain is a graduate of the French National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of French Polynesia. From 1990 to 2000, Chinain was a scientist in the medical oceanography unit at Louis Malardé Institute in Tahiti, French Polynesia. In 2000 Chinain was appointed head of the ciguatera research program at the institute. Research in her laboratory focuses on the ecology, biodiversity, taxonomy and systematics of the ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus, and the development of methods for toxin detection. Chinain and her team also manage field monitoring programs throughout French Polynesian lagoons and the Pacific region, and Chinain manages the epidemiological survey of marine biotoxins intoxications for French Polynesia. Dinoflagellate
The dinoflagellates (Greek δῖνος ''dinos'' "whirling" and Latin ''flagellum'' "whip, scourge") are a monophyletic group of single-celled eukaryotes constituting the phylum Dinoflagellata and are usually considered algae. Dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, but they also are common in freshwater habitats. Their populations vary with sea surface temperature, salinity, and depth. Many dinoflagellates are photosynthetic, but a large fraction of these are in fact mixotrophic, combining photosynthesis with ingestion of prey (phagotrophy and myzocytosis). Gambierdiscus
''Gambierdiscus'' is a genus of marine dinoflagellates that produce ciguatoxins, a type of toxin that causes the foodborne illness known as ciguatera. They are usually epiphytic on macroalgae growing on coral reefs. Morphology ''Gambierdiscus'' cells generally have a lenticular shape with a depression on the ventral side of the cell, from where the two dissimilar flagella arise. ''Gambierdiscus'' cells have an orange to brown colour due to the assessory pigments peridinin, diadinoxanthin and dinoxanthin. Distribution The marine dinoflagellate genus ''Gambierdiscus'' occurs globally in tropic and subtropic regions. It mainly grows attached to macroalgae and coralline turfalgae. Albert Sézary (26 December 1880, Algiers – 1 December 1956, Paris) was a French dermatologist and syphilogist. He served as a hospital interne in Algiers (from 1901) and Paris (from 1905), where he worked with neurologists Joseph Jules Dejerine and Fulgence Raymond and dermatologists Lucien Jacquet and Edouard Jeanselme.
