Minnesota State Highway 278 (MN 278) was a state highway in Minnesota, originally connecting MN 100 in Robbinsdale to MN 152 in Minneapolis. It existed entirely in Hennepin County. The route was decommissioned in 1982. Route description When authorized, Highway 278 began at MN 100 and followed 36th Avenue North along the border of Crystal and Robbinsdale. Upon reaching U.S. Route 52 (West Broadway), it traveled southeast concurrent with 52 and State Highway 218 to Lowry Avenue. It then followed Lowry Avenue east into Minneapolis, crossing U.S. Route 169 at Lyndale Avenue and ending at State Highway 152 (Washington Avenue). History MN 278 was authorized in 1949. In 1978, the western terminus was moved to US 52 from the previous MN 100, transferring the 36th Avenue North portion of the route to Robbinsdale city maintenance. Bohanon filed the first claim in the Township of Crystal Lake. Railroads didn't reach the area until 1880. Minnesota State Highway 218 was a highway that originally ran from U.S. Route 218 in St. Paul to U.S. Route 210 in Brainerd. In 1935, it was extended south to Owatonna along the former route of U.S. 218. Around 1949, it was extended north of Brainerd to Merrifield. Route description Highway 218 ran generally north-south, passing through Brainerd, Pierz, Foley, Becker, Big Lake, Elk River, Anoka, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rosemount, Farmington, Northfield, Faribault, and Owatonna. Minnesota State Highway 152 was a highway in Minnesota, connecting the cities of St. Cloud and Minneapolis. It ran parallel to U.S. Route 52 and its route number derives from this. It originally began at U.S. 52 in St. Cloud and ran to U.S. 52 in Minneapolis, at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Broadway Street. Route description Highway 152 served as an alternate of U.S. 52, running northwest–southeast from St. Cloud to Minneapolis. Legally, the route was defined as routes 129 and 239 in the Minnesota Statutes § 161.115(60) and § 161.115(170). It was not marked with these numbers. History Highway 152 was authorized in 1933, with a segment running through downtown St. Cloud to Sauk Rapids authorized in 1949.
