Minneapolis City Council Election, 2017
The 2017 Minneapolis City Council election was held on November 7, 2017, to elect the members of the Minneapolis City Council. The political composition remained unchanged, with the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) retaining 12 seats and the Green Party of Minnesota one seat. Three DFL incumbents were defeated by intraparty opponents. The new City Council convened on January 8, 2018. Minneapolis City Council
The Minneapolis City Council is the lawmaking body of Minneapolis. It consists of 13 members, elected from separate wards to four-year terms, via a ranked-choice method. The council structure has been in place since the 1950s. In recent elections, council membership has been dominated by the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). As of 2022, 12 members identified with the DFL, while one identified with Democratic Socialists of America. Until the 2021 Minneapolis City Council election, the city's government structure was considered a Weak mayor, weak-mayor, strong-council system. Mohamud Noor ( so, Maxamuud Nuur, ar, محمود نور) is an American computer scientist, activist and politician. He is a Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing District 60B in the central Twin Cities metropolitan area. He is also the former director of the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota. Personal life Noor was born in 1977 in Somalia. Following the start of the civil war, he and his family sought asylum in Kenya. In 1999 they emigrated to the United States, settling in Minnesota. Noor earned a B.S. in computer science from the Metropolitan State University. He held a part-time job at Macy's while studying.
