The Government of Maharashtra is the state governing authority for the state of Maharashtra, India. It is a democratically elected government with 288 MLAs elected to the Vidhan Sabha for a five-year term. Maharashtra has a Maharashtra Legislature which consists of two Houses, the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council). As is the case in a parliamentary system, the government is formed by the party, alliance or group of assembly members who command the majority in the Lower House. The Lower House majority leader becomes the Chief Minister and selects the cabinet members from both Houses. In case an unelected person becomes the Chief Minister, they must be elected to either House within the following six months. First Shankarrao Chavan Ministry
Shankarrao Chavan was appointed as Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time on 21 February 1975, replacing Vasantrao Naik. His first ministry lasted till 16 April 1977, and was succeeded by Vasantdada Patil's ministry. Government formation After Congress securing a supermajority in 1972 legislative elections, the incumbent chief minister Vasantrao Naik had continued in his office. Following 1972 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, incumbent chief minister Vasantrao Naik was re-appointed, and he formed his third government on 14 March 1972. This was to be Naik's last government which served until 20 February 1975. Yashwantrao Jijoba Mohite (7 November 1920 – 22 August 2009), aka Bhau, was an Indian politician, a former member of the Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1984 and MLA from Karad, Maharashtra from 1952 to 1980 from Indian National Congress. When he was taking education in Kolhapur, he participated in the Indian freedom struggle. He was also one of founders of Peasants and Workers Party of India in 1947. Rafiq Zakaria (5 April 1920 – 9 July 2005) was an Indian politician and Islamic religious cleric. He was closely associated with the Indian independence movement and Indian National Congress party. He was known for his advocacy of traditional Islam. Early life and education Zakaria, a Konkani Muslim from Maharashtra, was an alumnus of Ismail Yusuf College, Mumbai. He won the Chancellor's Gold Medal in the MA examination of University of Mumbai and in 1948 received a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Sadashiv Govind Barve ( variously mentioned as Sa Go Barve (or S. G. Barve, ) (1914 – 1967) was an Indian politician. He first made his name as an administrator, and was later persuaded to join politics by Yashwantrao Chavan. He joined the Congress Party and was elected to Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha in 1962 from Shivajinagar (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in Pune.
