Federal Public Service Justice
The FPS Justice ( nl, FOD Justitie, french: SPF Justice, german: FÖD Justiz), formerly the Ministry of Justice, is a federal public service of Belgium. It was created by royal order on May 23, 2001, as part of the plans of the Verhofstadt I Government to modernise the federal administration. The transformation from a ministry into a federal public service was completed on July 15, 2002. The FPS Justice is responsible to the minister of justice. Organisation The FPS Justice is currently organised into three directorates-general: *The Directorate-General for Judicial Organisation *The Directorate-General for Legislation and Fundamental Rights and Freedoms *The Directorate-General for Correctional Facilities Several independent organisations resort under the FPS Justice, such as the Gambling Commission. Théophile De Lantsheere
Théophile Charles André de Lantsheere (4 November 1833 – 21 February 1918) was a Belgian Catholic Party politician. Born in Asse, de Lantsheere was a student of law, obtaining a doctorate, and practiced as an advocate in Brussels. He was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in 1872 for the Diksmuide area, serving until 1900. He served as Minister of Justice from 1871 to 1878. From 1884 to 1895 he was President of the Chamber of Representatives. After leaving the Chamber of Representatives he served a term from 1900 to 1905 in the Belgian Senate representing West Flanders. From 1890, he held the post of director of the National Bank of Belgium and from 1905 until his death in 1918 he was governor of the National Bank of Belgium (NBB). Together with Baron Alphonse de Moreau d’Andoy and Victor Allard, Théophile de Lantsheere formed the first group of Catholics on the board of the NBB. Aloys (Alois) Jean Maria Joseph, Viscount Van de Vyvere (8 June 1871 – 22 October 1961) was a Belgian Catholic Party politician. Biography Born in Tielt, Van de Vyvere studied law and philosophy and worked as a lawyer in Ghent, where he served as a local councillor between 1909 and 1911. Emile Vandervelde (25 January 1866 – 27 December 1938) was a Belgian socialist politician. Nicknamed "the boss" (''le patron''), Vandervelde was a leading figure in the Belgian Labour Party (POB–BWP) and in international socialism. Career Emile Auguste Vandervelde was born into a middle-class family in Ixelles, a suburb of Brussels, in Belgium on 25 January 1866. Initially attracted by Liberal politics, Vandervelde entered the Free University of Brussels as a law student in 1881. However, he soon became interested in emerging socialist ideas and, in 1885, joined the small Workers' League of Ixelles (''Ligue Ouvrière d'Ixelles''). Jules Laurent Jean Louis Renkin (3 December 1862 – 15 July 1934) was a Belgium, Belgian politician. He served as the minister of colonies for the Belgian Congo from 30 October 1908 to 21 November 1918. Born in Ixelles, Renkin studied and practised law, and helped found the journal ''L'Avenir Sociale''. Jules Van Den Heuvel
Jules Van den Heuvel (16 November 1854 – 22 October 1926) was a Roman Catholic politician from Ghent in Belgium. He also made his mark as a university lecturer in public law and, more generally, as an academic. Between 1915 and 1918 Van den Heuvel served as his war ravaged country's diplomatic representative to the Holy See. Early life He was not born into a wealthy family. His parents ran a shop selling knitted goods. His parents were deeply affected by the death in quick succession of their three elder children from croup, and Jules was sent away to live with an aunt in Bernissart for a few years before he returned to Ghent, where the educational possibilities were better.
