Miniature Sensor Technology Integration-3
Miniature Sensor Technology Integration-3 (MSTI-3) was a technology demonstration satellite operated by the United States Air Force. It was equipped with two infrared cameras and one visible light camera, designed to survey Earth's surface features and characterize their appearance in infrared wavelengths. MSTI-3 launched on 17 May 1996 aboard an Orbital Sciences Pegasus rocket. Spacecraft MSTI-3 was a small satellite that measured high, in diameter, and including propellant. Power was supplied by a single, three-faceted GaAs solar array mounted to one side of the spacecraft, providing an average of 291 watts at launch and 225 watts at end of life. A set of three reaction wheels provided attitude control, while hydrazine thrusters allowed for coarse maneuvering and momentum control. Spectrum Astro
Spectrum Astro was a privately held American corporation that designed, manufactured, and sold satellites. Spectrum Astro's, at the time, unique satellite production method was to design and manufacture space satellites, in their entirety, at a single research, design and manufacturing site. This novel idea allowed for lower cost and more reliable satellites which were able to be fully tested as a whole before launch. The Spectrum Astro plant, located in Gilbert, Arizona, had especially wide hallways and internal bay doors to rooms which allowed for satellites to be easily transported within the building for various stages of design, assembly, and testing. Spectrum Astro was founded by W. David Thompson in 1988, with $5,000 in cash and a credit card, and finished its first year in operation with $27,000 in revenue. The Satellite Control Network (SCN), operated by the United States Space Force's Space Delta 6, provides support for the operation, control, and maintenance of a variety of United States Department of Defense and some non-DoD satellites. This involves continual execution of Telemetry, Tracking, and Commanding (TT&C) operations.
