Minerva Mirabal Reyes
María Argentina Minerva Mirabal Reyes, or Minerva, was the third Mirabal sister, born March 12, 1927 in the Dominican Republic to Mercedes Reyes Camilo and Enrique Mirabal. Like her older sisters, Minerva also received an education at El Colegio Inmaculada Concepción, at the urging of her mother, Mercedes Mirabal. Through their education, Minerva and her sisters began to recognize and speak out against the oppressive dictatorship of Generalissimo Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Education and early activism When she was 22, Minerva had a personal experience with Trujillo, at an elitist party she and her family were invited to, turning down his sexual advances, causing her to be jailed and not able to practice her law degree. Minerva’s parents feared that her involvement with politics would ultimately get her killed so they did not allow her to register for law school, especially following her rejection to Trujillo. Mirabal Sisters
The Mirabal sisters ( es, hermanas Mirabal ) were four sisters from the Dominican Republic, three of whom (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo () and were involved in clandestine activities against his regime. The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Adela "Dedé", who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014. The assassinations turned the Mirabal sisters into "symbols of both popular and feminist resistance". In 1999, in their honor, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Hermanas Mirabal Province
Hermanas Mirabal (; named after the Mirabal sisters) is a province of the Dominican Republic. It was split from Espaillat Province in 1952 and was originally called Salcedo, the name of its capital city; it is still referred to by this name sometimes. The province is very fertile and its main agricultural product is plantain. Name The name change came on November 21, 2007. It commemorates the Mirabal sisters, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country by giving up a privileged life to fight against the powerful Dominican leader, Rafael Trujillo. ''In the Time of the Butterflies'' is a 2001 feature film, produced for the Showtime television network, directed by Mariano Barroso and based on Julia Álvarez's book of the same name. The story is a fictionalized account of the lives of the Mirabal sisters, Dominican revolutionary activists, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated on November 25, 1960. In the film, Salma Hayek played one of the sisters, Minerva, and Edward James Olmos plays Trujillo. Marc Anthony has a minor role as Minerva's first love, and the impetus for her later revolutionary activities. Plot The film begins with pictures and video of the actual victims of Trujillo.
