Mimma Zavoli
Mimma Zavoli (born 13 February 1963) is a Sammarinese politician who was elected as Captain Regent of San Marino and served alongside Vanessa D'Ambrosio from 1 April until 1 October 2017. She was elected to the Grand and General Council in 2012. She was appointed to become the Chairman of the Internal Affairs Commission and member of the Commission of Justice Affairs. She was also appointed to the Council of Twelve and the National Group of Inter-Parliamentary Union. She has a diploma of School of Science and a diploma of Infantile Community Assistant. In 1998, she obtained a mini-graduation to teaching qualifications. She started her career in 1981, working in the kindergarten. Now, she works as Inspector of Labour. Captains Regent
The Captains Regent (Italian: ''Capitani reggenti'') are the two heads of state of the Republic of San Marino. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term. The investiture of the captains regent takes place on 1 April and 1 October every year. This tradition dates back at least to 1243. The practice of dual heads of government (diarchy) is derived directly from the customs of the Roman Republic, equivalent to the consuls of ancient Rome. History The establishment of the regency took place during the first half of the 13th century, when they had the role of managing justice, a task similar to competence of magistrates. Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party
The Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party ( it, Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese, PDCS) is a Christian-democratic political party in San Marino. The PDCS is an observer member of the European People's Party (EPP), having joined the EPP in 1993. Its Italian counterpart was the now-dissolved Christian Democracy. Its internal left-wing faction left in 2006 to form the Centre Democrats and was joined by the social democrats of Arengo and Freedom. It is led by Giovanni Lonfernini, a former Captain-Regent. In the 2006 general election PDCS won the 32.9% of the vote and 21 out of 60 seats in the Grand and General Council. The Grand and General Council ( it, Consiglio Grande e Generale) is the parliament of San Marino. The council has 60 members elected for a five-year term. History From the fifth century San Marino was ruled by an assembly composed by all the family heads known as the Arengo. However, as population grew, such a body became more and more dysfunctional, with its functioning being crippled by feuds between families. While the exact timing is unknown, there is historical evidence that by the early 13th century the citizens of San Marino elected an assembly called Council of the LX, which was also known as the Grand and General Council. In this first stage the power was shared between the Arengo and the Council, with the latter gaining more and more power over the centuries. Vanessa D'Ambrosio
Vanessa D'Ambrosio (born 26 April 1988) was Captains Regent, Captain Regent of San Marino, serving from April until October 2017 (alongside Mimma Zavoli). Early life and education She was born in Borgo Maggiore, San Marino on 26 April 1988. She graduated with a thesis on the economy of labor and the gender issue in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf crisis from the University of Bologna. She is the granddaughter of Francesco Berti, one of the founders of the Sammarinese Communist Party. Career She was elected to the Grand and General Council back in 2014. She was appointed to become a coordinator for the United Left. D'Ambrosio is the second youngest woman who becomes Captain Regent in the history of San Marino after Maria Lea Pedini-Angelini, who was sworn in at the age of 25.
