Milne Townsite
The Milne Townsite, commonly referred to as Milnes, is an abandoned community in Strathy Township, municipality of Temagami, Nipissing District in northeastern Ontario, Canada, located on the north shore of Link Lake, just south of the Milne-Sherman Road, and about north of the town of Temagami. It covered about 3.5% of the town of Temagami and had 40 residents. History The Milne Townsite was constructed to support the Milne sawmill, which in turn was operated by the Milne Lumber Company. In 1990, the province of Ontario bought and closed the mill in an effort to ease tensions concerning logging (see Red Squirrel Road). Operation of the sawmill ceased and 150 people lost their jobs. During this time the municipality of Temagami announced that another sawmill would be constructed sometime in the future. Sherman Mine
Sherman Mine is a closed open pit mine in Temagami, Ontario, Canada. It was a major producer of iron ore, starting production in 1968 and closing in 1990. Sherman was the largest open pit mine in Temagami, consisting of seven open pits known as the East Pit, South Pit, North Pit, West Pit and the Turtle Pits. The mine was discovered in the early part of the twentieth century, however interest was limited as a result of silver and gold discoveries in northeastern Ontario. While the Ontario government offered bounties to producers of iron ore, there was little interest in putting any iron mine into production as a result of cheaper Mesabi Range ores from the US and the Great Depression. It was only in the 1950s that Canadian steel producers started to investigate domestic supplies of iron ore. Temagami
Temagami, formerly spelled as Timagami, is a municipality in northeastern Ontario, Canada, in the Nipissing District with Lake Temagami at its heart. The Temagami region is known as ''n'Daki Menan'', the homeland of the area's First Nations community, most of whom are Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), living on Bear Island. The official name for this group is the Temagami First Nation. However, a larger group that includes these people, plus non-status residents and some non-residents is called the Teme-Augama Anishnabai. Link Lake is a narrow lake in Ottawa River drainage basin in Strathy Township, Temagami, Nipissing District of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The abandoned Milne Townsite lies on the northern shore of the lake. The primary outflow is Johnny Creek to Net Lake, which flows via Cassels Lake, Rabbit Lake, the Matabitchuan River and Lake Timiskaming into the Ottawa River. Red Squirrel Road
Red Squirrel Road, also called the Red Squirrel logging road and formerly called the Johns-Manville Road, is a logging road located within the Municipality of Temagami, Nipissing District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It runs from Whitefish Bay on Lake Temagami to Ontario Highway 11 at the community of Owaissa. History Red Squirrel Road was originally created in 1965 by the Johns-Manville company to log jack pine on the sand flats just north of Ferguson Bay at the northern end of Lake Temagami. As the flats were cleared the logged jack pine was towed down Red Squirrel Road towards Highway 11. During 1970, Red Squirrel Road became longer to log the jack pine through the Sharp Rock Portage near Diamond Lake.
