Millewa Reference Area
The Millewa is a region of north western Victoria in Australia. History The County of Millewa was proclaimed in the area in the nineteenth century. In the 1960s the then dryland farming areas of Nangiloc and Colignan were irrigated. Subsequently, they became less seen as being in the Millewa, and more being part of Sunraysia. In the late 1990s, irrigation came to northern Millewa towns like Cullulleraine. These still remain firmly "Millewa" however. Geography It covers the triangular area north of the Sunset Country and south of the diagonal Murray River that grows wheat and other dryland crops. The part of this triangle that is irrigated is known as Sunraysia. The major centres of the region are Werrimull, Meringur, Cullulleraine and Hattah. Dryland Farming
Dryland farming and dry farming encompass specific agricultural techniques for the non-irrigated cultivation of crops. Dryland farming is associated with drylands, areas characterized by a cool wet season (which charges the soil with virtually all the moisture that the crops will receive prior to harvest) followed by a warm dry season. They are also associated with arid conditions, areas prone to drought and those having scarce water resources. Process Dryland farming has evolved as a set of techniques and management practices used by farmers to continually adapt to the presence or lack of moisture in a given crop cycle. In marginal regions, a farmer should be financially able to survive occasional crop failures, perhaps for several years in succession. Survival as a dryland farmer requires careful husbandry of the moisture available for the crop and aggressive management of expenses to minimize losses in poor years. Jacinta Duncan
Jacinta Duncan is an Australian science educator who grew up on marginal farming land in the Millewa area in the top North West of Victoria. Working alongside her father, Duncan learned animal husbandry, and how to crop wheat and barley while her mother, a primary school teacher, taught her music, French and took her to learn ballet. Duncan says "the importance of an inquisitive mind and a robust education has always been at the forefront of my life". Education and career Completing a Bachelor of Biological Sciences at the La Trobe University, Duncan majored in Biochemistry and Botany. Her Honours year research focussed on a natural defence mechanism in plants, the production of phytoalexins to halt the growth of invasive fungi. Millewa Football League
The Millewa Football League is an Australian rules football league with teams based in north-western Victoria, Australia, Victoria and south-western New South Wales, Australia. The clubs are mostly based within the same area as the clubs in the Sunraysia Football League, but generally represent smaller towns and communities. Clubs only field one senior football team and up to five netball teams. History The ''Millewa Football Association'' was reformed in 1925. At this time it had teams representing Kulnine, Lock 9, Lake Cullulleraine and Werrimull, and a team called "the Kangaroos". Lake Cullulleraine were the premiers that year. A fortnight after the grand final, a combined association team played the Mildura Football Club in a charity match. Meringur, Victoria
Meringur is a farming settlement to the west of Mildura in northwestern Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Meringur and the surrounding area had a population of 67 down from 128 in 2011. It is located in the Millewa region at the end of the Red Cliffs-Meringur Road towards the South Australian border. The Post Office opened on 2 February 1926. The railway opened in 1925, and the station had facilities to handle passengers, sheep and grain. The line was extended to Morkalla in 1931, but the extension closed in 1965. The entire line was closed by 1988. The Millewa Pioneer Forest and Historical Village open-air museum is in Meringur. Werrimull, Victoria
Werrimull is a small town and locality in the Rural City of Mildura, part of the Sunraysia region of Victoria. The place by road, is situated about 10 kilometres west of Karawinna and 10 kilometres east of Bambill. It is west southwest of Mildura, 13 kilometres south of the Sturt Highway opposite Lake Cullulleraine. At the , Werrimull and the surrounding area had a population of 112, declining from 320 in 2011. ''Werrimull'' is an indigenous Australian word believed to mean Eagle. ''Werrimull'' is sometimes misspelt ''Werrimul'' possibly because it is confused with an indigenous group from the Horsham region. Sunraysia
Sunraysia is an illdefined district, sometimes incorrectly referred to as an economic region, located in northwestern Victoria and southwestern New South Wales in Australia. The region is renowned for its sunshine, intensive horticulture including grapes and oranges, and grain farms. Its main centre is Mildura, Victoria. Etymology The name ''Sunraysia'' derives from a contest that entrepreneur Jack De Garis held in 1919, as part of a promotion on behalf of the Australian Dried Fruits Association. The public were invited to submit a name to describe the dried fruits grown in the Mildura area. The winning name was ''Sun-Raysed'', which was modified as ''Sunraysia'' to describe the district as a whole. In 1920, De Garis started a newspaper in Mildura called the ''Sunraysia Daily'', helping to establish the name.
