Mike Martin (character)
Mike Martin is the protagonist in two novels, ''The Fist of God'' (1994) and ''The Afghan'' (2006) by Frederick Forsyth. Martin is an Englishman who looks remarkably Arab because his maternal grandmother (mentioned in the novel as "Indira Bohse" - likely to be Indira Bose) was Indian. His father (Nigel Martin) was an accountant in an unnamed English Oil Company and his mother (half-Indian Susan Granger) was an air-stewardess with BOAC. His father was posted in the Middle East and so he (and his brother) grew up in Baghdad, becoming fluent in Arabic and English. After moving to England during a time of great political uncertainty in Iraq, he joined the Paras at the age of 19, and soon became an officer. Later, he was accepted into the Special Air Service. The Fist Of God
''The Fist of God'' is a 1994 suspense novel by British writer Frederick Forsyth, with a fictitious retelling of the Iraqi Project Babylon and the resulting "supergun". Featuring a story set during the Persian Gulf War, the novel details an Allied effort to find the suspected Iraqi nuclear weapon. The story features the brothers Mike and Terry Martin who also appear in Forsyth's 2006 novel ''The Afghan''. Plot Dr. Gerald Bull designs a supergun codenamed Project Babylon for Iraq. He believes that it is for launching satellites into space and assumes it could serve no military purpose for a few reasons: firstly, it cannot traverse from side to side, nor alter its angle of elevation or depression; secondly, it would have to be completely disassembled and reassembled to change targets, and lastly, it could fire only once before being located and destroyed. Secret Intelligence Service
The Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI6 ( Military Intelligence, Section 6), is the foreign intelligence service of the United Kingdom, tasked mainly with the covert overseas collection and analysis of human intelligence in support of the UK's national security. SIS is one of the British intelligence agencies and the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service ("C") is directly accountable to the Foreign Secretary. G8 Summit
The Group of Eight (G8) was an inter-governmental political forum from 1997 until 2014. It had formed from incorporating Russia into the Group of Seven, or G7, and returned to its previous name after Russia left in 2014. The forum originated with a 1975 summit hosted by France that brought together representatives of six governments: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, thus leading to the name Group of Six or G6. The summit came to be known as the Group of Seven in 1976 with the addition of Canada. Russia was added to the political forum from 1997, which the following year became known as the G8. In March 2014 Russia was suspended indefinitely following the annexation of Crimea, whereupon the political forum name reverted to G7. Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) program to arm and finance the Afghan mujahideen in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1992, prior to and during the military intervention by the USSR in support of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The mujahideen were also supported by Britain's MI6, who conducted their own separate covert actions.
