Midland Railway Workshops
The Midland Railway Workshops in Midland, Western Australia, were the main workshops for the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) for over 80 years. History The first railway workshops in Western Australia were located at Fremantle and shifted to Midland in 1904. The Midland Railway Workshops were involved with all WAGR rolling stock and engine construction and maintenance. Steam engines continued to operate on mainline service until 1971, and all major maintenance occurred at the workshops. Workforce Generations of workers at the workshops had considerable numbers of European migrants who arrived in Australia with limited English language, and there were significant groups of Italian migrants in the workforce. Western Australian Government Railways
Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) was the operator of railway services in the state of Western Australia between October 1890 and June 2003. Owned by the state government, it was renamed a number of times to reflect extra responsibility for tram and ferry operations that it assumed and later relinquished. Westrail was the trading name of WAGR from September 1975 until December 2000, when the WAGR's freight division and the Westrail name and logo were privatised. Its freight operations were privatised in December 2000 with the remaining passenger operations transferred to the Public Transport Authority in July 2003. Nowergup Railway Depot
Nowergup railway depot is a Transperth depot in the suburb of Nowergup, Western Australia History Nowergup depot was built to service the Transperth B-series electric multiple units that were ordered to operate service on the Joondalup line, It is owned by the Public Transport Authority and leased to Downer Rail / Bombardier Transportation as part of its contract to maintain the B-series trains. The depot was completed on 17 May 2004 and officially opened on 13 June 2004 by Premier Geoff Gallop and Planning & Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan. Claisebrook Railway Depot
Claisebrook railway depot (also known as Claisebrook railcar depot) is a Transperth Trains depot adjacent to Claisebrook station, at 122 Kensington Street, East Perth. When trains leave this depot, they connect with the Midland, Fremantle, Armadale, and Joondalup lines. In the 1940s, Claisebrook road depot referred to the then tramway depot adjoining the railway property in East Perth and much earlier in the 1860s the term Claisebrook depot referred to the convict depot. Function The railway depot's primary purpose is to service, refurbish and upgrade Transperth's A-Series railcars. Bogie Exchange
Bogie exchange is a system for operating railway wagons on two or more gauges to overcome difference in the track gauge. To perform a bogie exchange, a car is converted from one gauge to another by removing the bogies or trucks (the chassis containing the wheels and axles of the car), and installing a new bogie with differently spaced wheels. It is generally limited to wagons and carriages, though the bogies on diesel locomotives can be exchanged if enough time is available. Transperth B-series Train
The B-series trains are a class of electric multiple unit built by Downer Rail in Maryborough, Queensland for Transperth between 2004 and 2019. History Perth's first electrified trains, the two-carriage A-Series, entered service in September 1991. The B-series trains are cleared to operate on the Midland, Armadale/Thornlie and Fremantle lines and are regularly used on these lines alongside the older A-Series. However, not all stations on these lines are capable of handling six-car sets as the platforms are not long enough, so they are usually run as 3-car sets. There are reported problems with the acceleration/deceleration systems with the closely spaced stations.
