Middlemount
Middlemount is a rural town and locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Middlemount had a population of 1,841 people. It is nicknamed the "Giant Peanut" by some locals due to its peanut-shaped road layout. Geography Middlemount is located inland (by road) from Mackay and Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The township is an accommodation hub to both permanent residents and transient workers. Middlemount is surrounded by the following coal mines: Foxleigh, Lake Lindsay, Middlemount Mine, Aquila Mine, German Creek and world record holding underground coal mine Grasstree. Mackenzie River, Queensland
Mackenzie River is a locality in the Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Mackenzie River had a population of 71 people. Geography The Mackenzie River forms the southern and eastern boundary of the locality. In the far north of the locality are two protected areas, the Junee National Park and the Junee State Forest. The locality is within the Bowen Basin coalfields and there are a number of active coal mines in the locality, including Foxleigh, Oak Park and Lake Lindsay coal mines with other areas being considered for future mines. Railway lines for the Blackwater rail system pass through the south of the locality. However, the mines within the locality are not serviced by these lines but via the lines in neighbouring Middlemount. German Creek Coal Mine
The German Creek Coal Mine is an underground coal mine 25 kilometres south west of Middlemount in Central Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 248 million tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 6 million tonnes of coal. The German Creek Formation lies within the Bowen Basin and is noted for containing hard coking coal of exceptionally high quality. The mine is co-owned by Capcoal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Australia. It is operated by Capcoal and employs around 700 people. Open-cut mining operations began in 1981. Underground mining along the same coal seam started at the Southern Colliery in 1988. Foxleigh Coal Mine
The Foxleigh Coal Mine is a coal mine in Mackenzie River, Isaac Region, Queensland, Australia. It is within the Bowen Basin coal reserves of Central Queensland. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 102 million tonnes of coking coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Asia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 3 million tonnes of coal. Coal extracted from the mine has a very low ash content which is rare in Australia and valued by steelmakers. The mine is owned by Middlemount South, POSCO and Nippon Steel. Exports leave the country via the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal at Hay Point. History A worker at the mine was killed on 18 December 2010, when a truck tyre exploded. Anglo American acquired a 70% stake in Foxleigh in 2007. Longwall
Longwall mining is a form of underground coal mining where a long wall of coal is mined in a single slice (typically thick). The longwall panel (the block of coal that is being mined) is typically long (but can be upto long) and wide. History The basic idea of longwall mining was developed in England in the late 17th century. Miners undercut the coal along the width of the coal face, removing coal as it fell, and used wooden props to control the fall of the roof behind the face. This was known as the Shropshire method of mining.
