Middle Eastern Cinema
Middle Eastern Cinema collectively refers to the film industries of Western Asia and part of North Africa. By definition, it encompasses the film industries of Egypt, Iran, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. As such, the film industries of these countries are also part of the cinema of Asia, or in the case of Egypt, Africa. Since the inception of cinema in Europe and the United States, many people assumed that cinema in the Middle East arrived much later than Western Cinema. However, it was found that cinema was brought into most of the Arab countries by the beginning of the 20th century by Pathé Frères or the Lumière Brothers. Eventually by the 1950s Egyptian cinema was the main dominating Arab and Middle Eastern film industry and this led to many other Middle Eastern countries incorporating Egyptian conventions into their own films. Studio Misr was a film studio established in Egypt in 1934 by the economist Talaat Harb. Owned and staffed by Egyptians, it was known as 'The Studio of Egypt'. For three decades, it was the leading Egyptian equivalent to Hollywood's major studios. Studio Misr's first film was '' Wedad'' (1936), the first film to star the singer Umm Kulthum. Aziza Amir
Aziza Amir ( ar, عزيزة أمير; 17 December 1901 – 28 February 1952) was an Egyptian actress, producer, and screenwriter. She has legendary status in Egyptian film. She was the first wife of Mahmoud Zulfikar. Early life and career Aziza Amir was born Mofida Mohamed Ghoneim in Damiettia, Egypt on 17 December 1901. Amir went to school at Hosn El Massarat on Mohamed Ali Street. Her dad worked at sea to provide for her family. Amir changed her name due to the general outlook of Egyptian society on theatre women and how it would’ve negatively affected her family's reputation. After the revolution of 1919 women's levels of energy rose and they wanted to make a difference. Amir got her acting start in the theater. Aziza then took the stage and started working as a theatre actress.
