Middenschouwen
Middenschouwen is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It covered the central part of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. Middenschouwen was created in a merger of Duivendijke, Elkerzee, Ellemeet and Kerkwerve in 1961. It existed until 1997, when it was merged into the new municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. Schouwen-Duiveland
Schouwen-Duiveland () is a municipality and an island in the southwestern Netherlands province of Zeeland. The municipality has 33,737 inhabitants (1 January 2016) and covers an area of (of which is water). The northside of the island has two fixed connections to Goeree-Overflakkee, the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingen. The southside has two fixed connections to cross the Oosterschelde to North Beveland, the Stormvloed Kering or Oosterscheldedam, part of the Delta Works and the Zeeland Bridge. The island is mostly flat and is, besides a small area, below the sea level. On the western tip is a dune whose highest point is about 42 meters above sea level. The island is, in the summer, very popular with (German) tourists. The Renesse area is a popular holiday destination for young people. Duivendijke
Duivendijke is a former village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It was located about 2 km southwest of Brouwershaven on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. The village had a church, which was demolished before the middle of the 18th century. The first bishop of Leeuwarden, Cunerus Petri, was born in Duivendijke around 1530. Until 1961, Duivendijke was the name of a separate municipality, that also covered the hamlets Klaaskinderenkerke, Brijdorpe and Looperskapelle Looperskapelle is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Elkerzee
Elkerzee is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 1 km south of Scharendijke.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. Elkerzee is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Scharendijke. It has its own place name signs. It was home to 489 people in 1840. Nowadays it consists of about 10 houses. A church was built in 1741, but was demolished in 1958, because a new church had been built in neighbouring Scharendijke. The grist mill De Lelie was built in 1868 and decommissioned in 1960. In 2008, it was bought and turned into a restaurant specialising in pan cakes. The flour for the pancakes is ground by the wind mill. Ellemeet
Ellemeet is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 26 km west of Hellevoetsluis. History The village was first mentioned in 1236 as "Henricus de Ellimed", and means "hayland of Ello (person)". Ellemeet is a dike village without a church which developed in the 16th century along the Kuijersdam after the previous village was flooded. The new village was originally called Oudendijke, however in 1961, the name of the original village was adopted. The grist mill ’t Hert was built in 1748 and remained in operation until 1996. The original village did have a church, however it was destroyed in 1575 during the Siege of Zierikzee. Ellemeet was home to 467 people in 1840. Kerkwerve
Kerkwerve is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 24 km southwest of Hellevoetsluis. History The village was first mentioned in the 11th century as Kiricwereve, and means "artificial height with church". Kerkwerve is a circular village around a church which developed during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, the manor house Huis Te Werve was built to east of the Kerkwerve and existed until the 18th century. The village was burnt in 1576 by the Spanish Army. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church from 1900 with a wooden tower with a slender spire. The church is located on a ''terp'' (artificial hill)". Kerkwerve was home to 233 people in 1840. The village was severely affected by the North Sea flood of 1953.
