Michigan's 3rd Senate District
Michigan's 3rd Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Stephanie Chang since 2023, succeeding fellow Democrat Sylvia Santana. It is the most Democratic-leaning district in the Senate, giving both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over 80% of the vote. Geography District 3 encompasses parts of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 3, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, was based in the city of Dearborn and parts of western Detroit in Wayne County, also covering the smaller community of Melvindale. Stephanie Chang
Stephanie Gray Chang is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Michigan Senate, representing the 1st district. She previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 6th District, in the Michigan House of Representatives after being elected in November 2014. She is the first Asian American woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature. She was the first woman to give birth while serving as a Michigan State Senator. Early life and education Chang was born at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit. She was raised with her older sister, Josephina, in Canton, Michigan and is the daughter of parents who emigrated from Taiwan to pursue work in the auto industry. Morris Hood III
Morris W. Hood III (May 21, 1965 – May 11, 2020) was an American politician who served as a member of the Michigan Senate. He represented District 3, encompassing Dearborn, Melvindale, and a portion of Detroit from 2011 to 2018. Early life and education Hood was born in Detroit. He went to Wayne State University and Henry Ford College. Hood was the son of Morris Hood Jr. and the nephew of Raymond W. Hood. Career Prior to his election to the Legislature, Hood was an Production technician at Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Engine & Fuel Tank Plant. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the House in 1998. 2014 Michigan Senate Election
Elections for the Michigan Senate was held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, with partisan primary elections to select the party's nominees held on August 5. All 38 seats in the Michigan Senate were contested, and those elected will serve in the 98th and 99th Michigan Legislatures. This was the first election for the Michigan Senate contested under the constituency boundaries drawn in consequence of the 2010 U.S. Census. The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. There are 110 members, each of whom is elected from constituencies having approximately 77,000 to 91,000 residents, based on population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census.
