Michael Hannan (bishop)
Michael Hannan (20 July 1821 – 17 April 1882) was a Roman Catholic priest and archbishop. Born in County Limerick, Republic of Ireland, Hannan came to Halifax in 1840 to teach and finish his studies for the priesthood. Thomas-Louis Connolly
Thomas-Louis Connolly (1814 – 1876) was a Canadian prelate of the Catholic Church. Ordained a Capuchin priest, Connolly was, in turn, vicar general of the diocese of Halifax, Bishop of Saint John (1852–1859), and Archbishop of Halifax (1859–1876). Life Connolly was born in Cork, County Cork, Ireland. His father died when he was young, and he and his younger sister were raised by their mother. At school, he was a quick student and by age 16 had mastered Greek, Latin and French. He became a novice in the Order of Capuchins. At age 18 he went to Rome to complete his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained as a priest in 1838 in Lyons, France. He returned to Ireland, where he served as a prison chaplain in Dublin. When fellow Capuchin, Father William Walsh, was appointed bishop of Halifax in 1842, Father Connolly accompanied him to Nova Scotia as his secretary. Cornelius O'Brien (bishop)
Cornelius O'Brien (4 May 1843 – 9 March 1906) was a Canadian Roman Catholic priest, archbishop, and author of 39 books. Life Born in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, the son of Terence O'Brien and Catherine O'Driscoll, O'Brien graduated from Urban College and in 1871 was ordained a priest. In 1882, he was appointed Archbishop of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He followed Michael Hannan in this position. He established a Catholic high school (1888) and Holy Heart Seminary (1896), both in Halifax and helped to found the French-language Collège Sainte Anne (1890) in Pointe-de-l'Église, Nova Scotia. In 1894 he delivered a eulogy for the Rt. Hon. Sir John Thompson, a former Premier of Nova Scotia and the first Catholic Prime Minister of Canada. From 1896 to 1897, he was president of the Royal Society of Canada. He died in Halifax on 9 March 1906. William Walsh (archbishop)
William Walsh, (7 November 1804 – 11 August 1858), was an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax. He was born in Waterford, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland and died in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Biography Walsh studied at St. John's College, Waterford and Maynooth College and was ordained in Waterford. Following ordination he ministered in Dublin. Walsh became bishop of Halifax in 1845 and in 1852, was appointed archbishop of an expanded ecclesiastical province of Nova Scotia, also designated as Halifax. He became the first archbishop in British North America outside Quebec.
