Michael Davitt Shield
The Michael Davitt Shield is a Scottish Gaelic Football pre-season tournament founded in 2001. The competition takes place in the April of each season. The trophy is named after Irish Republican activist and founder of the Irish National Land League, Michael Davitt. Glaschu Gaels were the inaugural champions in 2000 and have won the competition a record four times. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. The Irish National Land League (Irish: ''Conradh na Talún'') was an Irish political organisation of the late 19th century which sought to help poor tenant farmers. Its primary aim was to abolish landlordism in Ireland and enable tenant farmers to own the land they worked on. The period of the Land League's agitation is known as the Land War. Historian R. F. Michael Davitt
Michael Davitt (25 March 184630 May 1906) was an Irish republican activist for a variety of causes, especially Home Rule and land reform. Following an eviction when he was four years old, Davitt's family migrated to England. He began his career as an organiser of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which resisted British rule in Ireland with violence. Convicted of treason felony for arms trafficking in 1870, he served seven years in prison. Upon his release, Davitt pioneered the New Departure strategy of cooperation between the physical-force and constitutional wings of Irish nationalism on the issue of land reform. With Charles Stewart Parnell, he co-founded the Irish National Land League in 1879, in which capacity he enjoyed the peak of his influence before being jailed again in 1881. Glasgow Gaels Gaelic Football Club or Glasgow Gaels GFC ( Irish: ''Cumann Peile Ghaeil Ghlaschú,'' ) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Glasgow. The team is a member of the Scottish GAA and are one of the most successful Scottish teams of all time. Dunedin Connollys Gaelic Football Club ( Irish: ''Dún Éideann Uí Chonghaile'') is a Scottish GAA club based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
