Michael Barkai
Michael (Yomi) Barkai ( he, מיכאל ברקאי; January 26, 1935 – May 28, 1999) was the Commander of the Israeli Navy, a recipient of the Medal of Distinguished Service for his command of the missile ships during the Yom Kippur War. Biography Childhood Barkai was born in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, as a first born of Moshe and Rachel Borsok. As a boy, he experienced the persecution and violence directed against the local Jewish community by the National Legionary State and the Ion Antonescu regime. In December 1947, his family tried to make aliyah to Palestine, but their ship was caught by the British and they were sent to the Cyprus internment camps, as the British prohibited Jews emigration to Palestine under the White Paper of 1939. Yigal Tumarkin
Igael Tumarkin (Hebrew: יגאל תומרקין; 23 October 1933 – 12 August 2021) was an Israeli painter and sculptor. Biography Peter Martin Gregor Heinrich Hellberg (later Igael Tumarkin) was born in 1933 in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. His father, Martin Hellberg, was a German theater actor and director, and a son of a pastor. His Jewish mother, Berta Gurevitch, and his stepfather, Herzl Tumarkin, immigrated to then British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) when he was two. Tumarkin served in the Israeli Navy. After completing his military service, he studied sculpture in Ein Hod, a village of artists near Mount Carmel, under Rudi Lehmann. His youngest son is the actor Yon Tumarkin. Tumarkin died at the age of 87 on 12 August 2021. Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. INS Dakar
INS ''Dakar'' ( he, אח"י דקר) was a diesel–electric submarine in the Israeli Navy. The vessel, a modified World War II British T-class submarine, had previously been of the Royal Navy. She was purchased by Israel from the Government of the United Kingdom in 1965 as part of a three T-class submarine deal. ''Dakar'' and her entire 69-man crew were lost en route to Israel on 25 January 1968. Despite extensive searches over the course of three decades, its wreckage was not found until 1999, when it was located between the islands of Cyprus and Crete at a depth of approximately . Alex Tal
Alex Tal (Hebrew: אלכס טל; born 1946 USSR) was the Commander of the Israeli Navy. Naval career Alex Tal made aliyah from the Soviet Union in 1964 and enlisted in the Israeli Navy. After his training he served on the first Missile boat the Israeli Navy received. He also participated in the Cherbourg Project. During the Yom Kippur War, he participated in Battle of Latakia as a captain of one of the missile boats. After the war, Tal continued to serve in the Israeli Navy. His posts included Commander of the missile boat fleet and the IDF Military attaché to Chile. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Aluf and became Commander of the Israeli Navy. Cancer
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Ezer Weizman
Ezer Weizman (; he, עֵזֶר וַיצְמָן ''Ezer Vaytsman''; 15 June 1924 – 24 April 2005) was the seventh President of Israel, first elected in 1993 and re-elected in 1998. Before the presidency, Weizman was commander of the Israeli Air Force and Minister of Defense. Gal Class Submarine
The Type 540 ''Gal''-class submarine is a slightly modified variant of the German HDW Type 206 submarine class (which includes the distinctive dome, or bulge, in the front of the boat), modified for Israeli requirements.
