Mic Crenshaw
Mic Crenshaw (born 1970) is an American recording artist, political activist, and educator living in Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. Mic Crenshaw creates music and musical platforms that connect artists across political and geographic boundaries. Biography Crenshaw was born on the South Side of Chicago in 1970. He graduated high school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he became a leading voice for social equity and racial justice. In 1992, he moved to Portland, Oregon to focus anti-racist activism into music and music education. Over the last twenty years he has recorded and produced more than ten albums. Mic Crenshaw recorded and performed with Dead Prez and Immortal Technique, and in 1994 formed the Portland-based hip hop group Hungry Mob as its frontman. In 2001, Mic Crenshaw won the Portland Poetry Slam and finished as a national finalist. He has served as co-manager of KBOO Community Radio twice since 2015. Books To Prisoners
Books to Prisoners is an umbrella term for organizations that mail free reading material to prison inmates. Background The first Books to Prisoners projects were founded in the early 1970s, including Seattle's Books to Prisoners and Boston's Prison Book Program as well as the Prison Library Project which was founded in Durham, NC, but relocated to Claremont, CA in 1986. Since then, dozens of prison book programs have been established, although many have had short life-spans. Currently there are more than fifty similar projects in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Juneteenth In Oregon
Juneteenth, a celebration of emancipation from slavery, was introduced to Oregon in 1945 by Kaiser Shipyard worker Clara Peoples, was recognized by the city of Portland in 1972, statewide in 2013, and federally in 2021. Timeline Peoples helped make Juneteenth recognized by the City of Portland in 1972. Mayor Sam Adams and Amanda Fritz declared Peoples the "Mother of Juneteenth" in 2011. Juneteenth became an observed holiday for the City of Portland and Multnomah County employees in 2020, as part of a resolution to address structural racism. Peoples and first Black Oregonian Senator Avel Gordly led an effort to make Juneteenth a statewide holiday in 2001. The resolution passed. Starting in May 2020, demonstrations over the police murder of George Floyd were held in the city of Portland, Oregon, concurrent with protests in other cities in the United States and around the world. By July 2020, many of the protests, which had been held every day since May 28, drew more than 1,000 participants. Protests continued into August, September, and October 2020, often drawing hundreds. As of July 2020, the majority of the protests in Portland were peaceful, but many demonstrations have involved rioting, heated confrontations with law enforcement and counter-protesters, and use of tear gas and other weapons.
