Meynell Langley
Meynell Langley is a small area of settlement in Derbyshire, England. It is located between Kirk Langley and Kedleston. Meynell Langley Hall is the ancestral home of the Meynell family. In 2015 Godfrey Meynell who had been High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1982, and his son, placed a version of Grotto in the Gulf of Salerno by Joseph Wright in an auction at Sotheby's. It was one of the Wright paintings that were kept at Meynell Langley Hall. The money raised was to be donated to assist Syrian refugees in Greece. Amber Valley
Amber Valley is a local government district and borough in the east of Derbyshire, England, taking its name from the River Amber. It covers a semi-rural zone with four main towns whose economy was based on coal mining and remains to some extent influenced by engineering, distribution and manufacturing, holding for instance the headquarters and production site of Thorntons confectionery. The seat in the House of Commons of Amber Valley is of smaller scope. The population at the 2011 Census was 122,309. Kirk Langley
Kirk Langley is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire. The village is northwest of Derby and south east of Brailsford on the A52 road. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census (including Meynell Langley) was 686. The Meynell family have held land at Kirk Langley since the reign of Henry I, and the village consists of two parts, Kirk Langley with the parish church, and Meynell Langley. The former Meynell Arms Hotel, now a private house, dates from the Georgian period. The Poles of Radbourne have also had landed interests in this area for many years. In the late 1940s a small council estate was built at Kirk Langley, close to the A52. The Church of St Michael was built in the early 14th century on the site of a much older one, for which traces of a Saxon wall near the west door provides some evidence. Grotto In The Gulf Of Salerno
''Grotto in the Gulf of Salerno'' is the subject of at least four paintings completed by Joseph Wright of Derby following his visit there in 1774. The paintings show the different lighting at different times of the day. Description The subject of these paintings are the grottoes near Naples. Wright went on a tour of Italy in the 1770s, where he spent a great deal of time in 1774 sketching and painting scenes around Salerno and Naples. Good details of these forages are available, as Wright's notebook is extant. For years afterward, he created paintings of Vesuvius and Virgil's Tomb, and crafted several variations on the cavern theme. Three of the paintings show the cavern at different times of the day, and they are sub-titled moonlight, sunset and ???
