The Mexicas de la Ciudad de México, also called Mexicas LFA or Mexicas CDMX, are an American football team based in Mexico City (CDMX), Mexico. The team was founded in 2015 with the name of Eagles, and is one of the four charter members of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional, the top American football league in Mexico. The Mexicas play their home games at the Estadio Jesús Martínez "Palillo". History The team was founded on 4 November 2015, one of the four original franchises of the LFA. The team hoped to draw fans from the local university, Instituto Politécnico Nacional. The IPN football team, the Águilas Blancas (White Eagles), were one of the most popular teams in ONEFA and their team colors are cherry and white. For these reasons, the LFA franchise chose Eagles as their nickname and adopted similar colors of red and white. Antonio Sandoval was hired as the Eagles first head coach. Gabriel Amavizca
Gabriel Amavizca Ortiz (born January 11, 1993) is a Mexican professional gridiron football placekicker for the Mexicas de la Ciudad de México of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA). He played college football at UDLAP, Universidad Madero and BUAP. In June 2019, Amavizca became the first CFL global player ever to score points in a regular season match. Early years Amavizca was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, but moved to Puebla when he was eight years old. He started playing gridiron football at the age of 11, after practicing other sports such as baseball, tennis and association football. In high school, he received a scholarship to play football at the ITESM Puebla. Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes (English: “Sports City Stadium”; formerly Estadio Azul) is a 33,000-seat stadium located in Ciudad de los Deportes, Mexico City. This sports facility is used for association football matches and for American football as well. The Tazón México has been played at the stadium. It was the home of Mexican football club Cruz Azul until 2018, hence the previous nickname of ''Estadio Azul'', and the Mexico national football team, especially in the early 1990s. 2023 Mexicas De La Ciudad De México Season
The 2023 Mexicas de la Ciudad de México season is the Mexicas de la Ciudad de México eighth season in the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) and their fourth under head coach Héctor Toxqui. Mexicas opened the season with an upset, after losing to Galgos 6–24, in what was Galgos' first victory in its history. The team won its first game the next week against Gallos Negros, 17–14, in a match played at the Estadio Olímpico de Querétaro. 2022 LFA Season
The 2022 LFA season was the seventh season of operation (sixth season of play) of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA), the top American football league in Mexico. The regular season began on 4 March and concluded on 24 April, with the playoffs beginning on April 30 and ending with the Tazón México V, on 21 May. Fundidores won their first LFA championship after defeating Gallos Negros 18–14 in the Tazón México V, played in Tijuana. Preseason events Expansion Two new teams joined the league for the 2021 season: Galgos de Tijuana, based in Tijuana, and Reyes de Jalisco, based in Zapopan, Jalisco. The 2022 Mexicas de la Ciudad de México season was the Mexicas de la Ciudad de México seventh season in the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) and their third under head coach Héctor Toxqui. 2021 LFA Season
The 2021 LFA season would have been the sixth season of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA), the top American football league in Mexico. Initially, the regular season was scheduled to begin in March 2021. However, the kickoff date was pushed back three months, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the season intended to start on 4 June 2021. In April 2021, however, the league confirmed the cancelation of the 2021 season due to the pandemic, stating that it would be almost impossible to play from June to September and then again start the next season in February 2022, thus, choosing not to play the 2021 season. 2020 LFA Season
The 2020 LFA season was the fifth season of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA), the top American football league in Mexico. The regular season began on February 8 and was to conclude on April 26, with the playoffs beginning on May 1 and ending with the Tazón México V on May 17. Nevertheless, after week 5, on March 16, the LFA announced the suspension of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and on 29 March 2020 the league confirmed that the season was cancelled. 2018 LFA Season
The 2018 LFA season was the third season of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional. The season saw all previous teams return with no additional new ones. The Eagles changed their team name to the Mexicas. This would be the first season that saw the championship, the Tazón México held at a neutral site of the Estadio Azul in Mexico City.
