Methodist Church (Barnstable, Massachusetts)
The Marstons Mills Community Church, formerly the Methodist Church, is a historic church building in the Marstons Mills village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. The white clapboard church was built in the town of Yarmouth, and moved to Marstons Mills in 1830. Its small belfry tower was added sometime between 1888 and 1908, around the same time it acquired some of its Queen Anne stylistic elements. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 for its architecture and for its role in community history. Description and history The Marstons Mills Community Church is set on the south side of Main Street, a short way northeast of its junction with Cotuit Road ( Massachusetts Route 149). It is a single-story wood-frame structure with a front-gable roof and clapboard siding. The Town of Barnstable ( ) is a town in the U.S. state of Massachusetts and the county seat of Barnstable County. Barnstable is the largest community, both in land area and population, on Cape Cod, and is one of thirteen Massachusetts municipalities that have been granted city forms of government by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts but wish to retain "the town of" in their official names. Marstons Mills (sometimes spelled Marston's Mills) is a village in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. It is primarily residential, located on Massachusetts Route 28, and rural in nature. Main roads also include Massachusetts Route 149, Race Lane, River Road, Osterville-West Barnstable Road, and Santuit-Newtown Road. History The village was first settled by Roger Goodspeed before 1653. His granddaughter Lydia married Benjamin Marston who developed the fulling mill and weaving operations, giving the village its namesake. Benjamin built a cottage which stands today as the William Marston House, and is considered a historical building by the town. Physical formation Marstons Mills is located on glacial outwash plains, the northern boundary of which is the moraine hills of the West Barnstable conservation lands. Yarmouth ( ) is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, Barnstable County being coextensive with Cape Cod. The population was 23,793 at the 2010 census. The town is made up of three major villages: South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth Port. Osterville is one of seven villages within the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. The village of Osterville is located on the south side of Barnstable on Nantucket Sound.
