Metavisual Tachiste Abstract
Metavisual Tachiste Abstract was a pivotal exhibition mounted by the Redfern Gallery, London in 1957. Subtitled 'Painting in England Today', Metavisual Tachiste Abstract ran from 4 April 1957 - 4 May 1957 . The exhibition was composed almost exclusively of works painterly abstraction and many of the leading British artists of the day exhibited works - including Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson, Roger Hilton, Robyn Denny, Alan Davie, Terry Frost, Sandra Blow and Gillian Ayres. The title for the exhibition was suggested by Delia Heron and the exhibition was elected by Rex Nan Kivell and Harry Tatlock Miller (advised by Patrick Heron), partly from artists associated with the Redfern Gallery but also on a more inclusive basis, since their aim was to present the broadest range of works that fulfilled the criteria of the title. Cliff Holden
Cliff Holden FCSD (12 December 1919 – 20 April 2020) was a British painter, designer, and silk-screen printer. Holden was born in Manchester, England in December 1919 and educated at Wilmslow Modern School, followed by Reaseheath School of Agriculture, where he studied agriculture and veterinary science. In 1944, Holden met David Bomberg (1890–1957) at the City Literary Institute in London. In 1945, Holden followed Bomberg to Borough Polytechnic. There Holden founded the Borough Group in 1946 together with other pupils of Bomberg. The purpose of the group was to develop the ideas of Bomberg who taught at Borough Polytechnic during the 1940s and 1950s, and was the leading light of the movement. Holden was first president of the group during 1946–48, as suggested by Bomberg, after which Bomberg became president and the group extended to 11 members, among them Dennis Creffield. Dorothy Bordass
Dorothy Bordass (née Foster, 1905 – 1992), was a British artist. She studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under R T Mumford, and at the Heatherley School of Fine Art under Ian McNab. Bordass painted in St Ives during the later 1950s/early 1960s and took part in many group shows, including the important Metavisual Tachiste Abstract at The Redfern Gallery in 1957 and extensively abroad. Her solo shows include New Vision Centre Gallery, Woodstock Gallery, in the provinces and overseas. In 1958 she participated in the inaugural exhibition of the National Gallery of Malaya, Kuala Lumpa. Peter Kinley
Peter Kinley (16 July 1926 - 1988) was a British artist. Early life and education He was born Peter Nikolaus Arthur Eduard Schwarz in Vienna on 16 July 1926. He was one of the Jewish children evacuated to England on a Kindertransport in 1938. He served in the British Army from 1944–48. After that, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1948–49 and at St Martin's School of Art from 1949–53, where he taught from 1954 onwards. Clifford Ellis
Clifford Wilson Ellis (1907–1985) was a British printmaker, painter, designer and art teacher. Ellis is notable both for the work he did for the Recording Britain project during the Second World War and for his role in the development of art teaching. Biography Ellis was born in Bognor Regis, Sussex. He came from an artistic family: his grandfather had been an artist and his uncle, Ralph Ellis (painter), Ralph Ellis, was a designer who had studied at the Slade School of Art. After a year at Saint Martin's School of Art, Clifford Ellis studied illustration at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London between 1924 and 1927. He then spent a year taking a post-graduate teacher training course before gaining a diploma in the history of art from the University of London. William Gear
William Gear RA RBSA (2 August 1915 – 27 February 1997) was a Scottish painter, most notable for his abstract compositions. Early life Gear was born in Methil in south-east Fife, Scotland, the son of Janet (1886-1955) and Porteous Gear (1881-1965), a coal miner. He attended Buckhaven High School where he won the Dux Arts Medal (1932). From 1932 to 1936 he studied at Edinburgh College of Art where fellow students included Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Margaret Mellis. Gwyther Irwin
(David) Gwyther (Broome) Irwin (7 May 1931 – 18 October 2008) was a British abstract artist born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, who had lived much of his life in north Cornwall. He was educated in Dorset, at Goldsmiths College and at the Central School of Art in London 1951–1954. Irwin first came to prominence in 1957 with an exhibition at Gallery One, and another at Gimpel Fils in 1959. In 1964, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, along with Joe Tilson, Bernard Meadows and Roger Hilton. In 1960, he married Elizabeth Gowlett and they had two sons and one daughter. His most famous artworks consisted of pictures assembled from newsprint and fragments of advertisements on paper, which he collected from the streets with his wife, and which were then worked up into collages often of fine delicacy and quite subtle shades. John Rivers Coplans (24 June 1920 – 21 August 2003) was a British artist, art writer, curator, and museum director. A veteran of World War II and a photographer, he emigrated to the United States in 1960 and had many exhibitions in Europe and North America.
