Dorothy Bordass
Dorothy Bordass (née Foster, 1905 – 1992), was a British artist. She studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under R T Mumford, and at the Heatherley School of Fine Art under Ian McNab. Bordass painted in St Ives during the later 1950s/early 1960s and took part in many group shows, including the important Metavisual Tachiste Abstract at The Redfern Gallery in 1957 and extensively abroad. Her solo shows include New Vision Centre Gallery, Woodstock Gallery, in the provinces and overseas. In 1958 she participated in the inaugural exhibition of the National Gallery of Malaya, Kuala Lumpa. Bordass was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters in 1978 and was a Fellow of Free Painters and Sculptors Free Painters and Sculptors (FPS) is an artist-led organisation based in London, England, which regularly exhibits every year. The Heatherley School of Fine Art is an independent art school in London. The school was named after Thomas Heatherley who took over as the school's principal from James Mathews Leigh (when it was named "Leigh's"). Founded in 1845, the school is affectionately known as Heatherleys. Metavisual Tachiste Abstract was a pivotal exhibition mounted by the Redfern Gallery, London in 1957. Subtitled 'Painting in England Today', Metavisual Tachiste Abstract ran from 4 April 1957 - 4 May 1957 . The exhibition was composed almost exclusively of works painterly abstraction and many of the leading British artists of the day exhibited works - including Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson, Roger Hilton, Robyn Denny, Alan Davie, Terry Frost, Sandra Blow and Gillian Ayres. The title for the exhibition was suggested by Delia Heron and the exhibition was elected by Rex Nan Kivell and Harry Tatlock Miller (advised by Patrick Heron), partly from artists associated with the Redfern Gallery but also on a more inclusive basis, since their aim was to present the broadest range of works that fulfilled the criteria of the title. Free Painters and Sculptors (FPS) is an artist-led organisation based in London, England, which regularly exhibits every year. It played a pivotal role in the establishment of abstract art in the 1950s and 1960s. History Background FPS was founded in 1952 by a number of members of the ICA who wanted to create their own painting group. Known initially as 'Painters Group from the ICA', the idea of freedom was one of the group's core beliefs. In the aftermath of World War II it was vital for the group to be able to stand for principles of artistic freedom and each artist was free to express themselves however they chose. Artists with a 'modern approach' were welcomed, generally falling into abstract or figurative camps.
