Mestersvig
Mestersvig, also called Mesters Vig, is a military outpost located in Scoresby Land, on the southwestern shore of Davy Sound in King Christian X Land, NE Greenland. It has a 1,800 m gravel airstrip . This airport is located near the Stauning Alps mountainous area. History From 1956 to 1963, Mestersvig was a zinc and lead mine. Later Mestersvig used to be the only permanent station in the Northeast Greenland National Park but all of the 1986 population of 40 has been split up into the three newer Northeast Greenland National Park research stations (Danmarkshavn, Nord and Daneborg) except a permanent population of two people, although tourists visit the station occasionally. In September 2015, as part of the newest defence agreement to increase the enforcement of sovereignty in Greenland, Mission Mestersvig was executed. Northeast Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaanni nuna eqqissisimatitaq, da, Grønlands Nationalpark) is the world's largest national park and the 10th List of largest protected areas in the world, largest protected area (the only larger protected areas all consist mostly of sea). A number of governments maintain permanent research stations in the Arctic. Also known as Arctic bases, polar stations or ice stations, these bases are widely distributed across the northern polar region of Earth. Historically few research stations have been permanent. Most of them were temporary, being abandoned after the completion of the project or owing to lack of funding to continue the research. King Christian X Land
King Christian X Land ( da, Kong Christian X Land) is an area of northeastern Greenland. History This area was named after King Christian X of Denmark and Iceland (1870 – 1947), who rose to the throne in 1912. At the time of the Three-year Expedition to East Greenland it is reported that when Lauge Koch was planning to fly over the region in 1932 he said: The name 'King Christian X Land' was first used on the 1932 1:1 million scale Danish Geodesic Institute map. At that time the area was occupied by Norway and was renamed 'Erik the Red's Land' ''(Eirik Raudes Land)'' but the Permanent Court of International Justice ruled against Norway in 1933 and the country subsequently abandoned its claims. Stauning Alps
The Stauning Alps ( da, Stauning Alper) are a large system of mountain ranges in Scoresby Land, King Christian X Land, northeastern Greenland. Administratively the Stauning Alps are part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. This mountainous area was named after Danish politician Thorvald Stauning (1873–1942) who had helped to finance expeditions to east Greenland planned and carried out by Danish explorers. History The Stauning Alps had been partly mapped earlier and named ''Rink Bjerge'' by Lauge Koch’s 1926–27 expeditions, being referred to as a "wild and jagged range of mountains." The range thus described obviously corresponded to the eastern end of the Stauning Alps and the adjacent Werner Range, but the name was not approved owing to the lack of detailed maps. Scoresby Land
Scoresby Land is an area of Eastern Greenland, which lies partly in Sermersooq and partly in the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. The area is uninhabited, except for Mestersvig, a military outpost. Muskoxen are found in Scoresby Land, and formerly also reindeer. The Frogman Corps ( da, Frømandskorpset) is the maritime special operations force of the Danish Defence part of Special Operations Command. On 1 July 2015, the Frogman Corps transferred from the Royal Danish Navy to the newly established Special Operations Command. HDMS ''Thetis'' is a ''Thetis''-class ocean patrol vessel belonging to the Royal Danish Navy. In mid-1990s the ship served as a platform for seismic operations in the waters near Greenland.
