Mesquite is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States adjacent to the Arizona state line and northeast of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 20,471. The city is located in the Virgin River valley adjacent to the Virgin Mountains in the northeastern part of the Mojave Desert. It is home to a growing retirement community, as well as several casino resorts and golf courses. History Mesquite was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1880, who called it ''Mesquite Flat''. The community was finally established on the third attempt after having been flooded out from the waters of the Virgin River. The name was later shortened to Mesquite, and the city was incorporated 1984. The community was named for the mesquite timber near the original town site. State Route 170 (SR 170) is a state highway in northeastern Clark County, Nevada. Also known as Riverside Road, the route serves the Riverside townsite, the town of Bunkerville and the city of Mesquite. The highway was previously a part of former U.S. Route 91 (US 91). Route description SR 170 begins at the Interstate 15 (I-15) Riverside interchange (exit 112), approximately northwest of Las Vegas in Virgin Valley. From there, the two-lane highway meanders southeasterly approximately before reaching the Riverside townsite and the Virgin River. Virgin River Gorge
The Virgin River Gorge, located between St. George, Utah, and Beaver Dam, Arizona, is a long canyon that has been carved out by the Virgin River in northwest Arizona. The Virgin River rises on the Colorado Plateau and created the topography of both Zion National Park and the Virgin River Gorge. The Gorge connects the southwestern rim of the Colorado Plateau and the northeastern part of the Mojave Desert. Interstate 15 in Arizona, Interstate 15 runs through the canyon and crosses the Virgin River several times. The Virgin River Gorge section of Interstate 15 is one of the most expensive parts of interstate highway ever constructed. Oasis (hotel And Casino)
Oasis was a hotel and casino located on of land at 897 West Mesquite Boulevard in Mesquite, Nevada, adjacent to Interstate 15. William Redd opened the resort as the Peppermill Resort in 1976, and later renamed it as Si Redd's Oasis. Until 1990, the Oasis was the only casino in Mesquite. In 2001, Redd sold the Oasis to Randy Black Sr. and Black Gaming. Portions of the Oasis were closed in December 2008, due to financial losses. The Oasis' casino was closed in 2010, although the hotel was still used for overflow guests at Black Gaming's other Mesquite casinos. The Oasis was demolished in 2013. History The property began in the 1960s, as the Western Village Truck Stop, with 28 motel rooms and 23 slot machines. Mesquite is a common name for several plants in the genus ''Prosopis'', which contains over 40 species of small leguminous trees. They are native to dry areas in the Americas. They have extremely long roots to seek water from very far under ground. As a legume, mesquites are one of the few sources of fixed nitrogen in the desert habitat. These trees bloom from spring to summer. They often produce fruits known as "pods". ''Prosopis'' spp. are able to grow up to tall, depending on site and climate.
