''Mesepiola specca'' is a moth of the family Prodoxidae. It is found in desert and chaparral habitats in southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. The wingspan is 8–12 mm. Adults have relatively narrow forewings with a mosaic of white, fuscous and rusty scales. The hindwings are uniform brown. Females have a hooked appendage on the seventh tergite, used to anchor the abdomen against a floral calyx when cutting into the ovary of the host plant. Adults feed on flower nectar of the larval host plants. The Prodoxidae are a family of moths, generally small in size and nondescript in appearance. They include species of moderate pest status, such as the Lampronia capitella, currant shoot borer, and others of considerable ecological and evolutionary interest, such as various species of "yucca moths". Description and affinities Prodoxidae are a family of primitive monotrysian Lepidoptera. Some of these small-to-medium-sized moths are day flying, like ''Lampronia capitella'', known to European gardeners as the currant shoot borer. Others occur in Africa and Asia. Moths are a paraphyletic group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies, with moths making up the vast majority of the order. ''Nolina'' is a genus of tropical xerophytic flowering plants, with the principal distribution being in Mexico and extending into the southern United States. They are large, dioecious plants.
