Mert.
Franz Carl Mertens (3 April 1764 – 19 June 1831) was a German botanist who was a native of Bielefeld. He specialized in the field of phycology. Mertens studied theology and languages at the University of Halle, and after graduation taught classes at Bremen Polytechnic College. In his spare time he studied botany, and through a mutual friend met German botanist Albrecht Wilhelm Roth (1757–1834). With Roth, he took scientific expeditions throughout Europe, including Scandinavia. From these trips, Mertens described a number of species of algae. He also performed illustrative work on Volume 3 of Roth's ''Catalecta botanica''. With Erlangen professor Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch (1771–1849), he published the third edition of Johann Christoph Röhling's ''Deutschlands flora'', a five volume treatise on German flora. Johann Christoph Röhling
Johann Christoph Röhling (27 April 1757 – 19 December 1813) was a German botanist and clergyman who was a native of Gundernhausen, a town near Darmstadt. He studied theology in Giessen, and later taught school in Frankfurt am Main. In 1792 he became a pastor in Braubach, and in 1800, a parish priest in Breckenheim. Röhling was the author of "''Deutschlands Flora''", an important treatise on German flora, of which the first edition was published in 1796. He also published a work on mosses of Germany titled "''Deutschlands Moose''" (1800). He was the taxonomic authority of the plant genus ''Melandrium'' (family Caryophyllaceae). Karl Heinrich Mertens
Karl Heinrich Mertens (Russian: Андрей Карлович Мертенс, 17 May 1796 – 18 September 1830 Kronstadt), was a German botanist and naturalist, and son of the botanist Franz Carl Mertens. Mertens was aboard the Russian vessel ''Senyavin'' under Captain Lieutenant Fedor Petrovich Litke with orders to explore the coasts of Russian America and Asia. This turned out to be one of the most productive voyages of discovery in the nineteenth century. Mertens, ornithologist Baron von Kittlitz, and mineralogist Alexander Postels collected and described over 1 000 new species of animal life, and some 2 500 specimens of plants, algae, and rocks. Ctenophora (; ctenophore ; ) comprise a phylum of marine invertebrates, commonly known as comb jellies, that inhabit sea waters worldwide. ''Mertensia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Boraginaceae. They are perennial herbaceous plants with blue or sometimes white flowers that open from pink-tinged buds.
