Merryfield Lane Halt is a railway station at the summit of the East Somerset Railway The East Somerset Railway is a heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Prior to the Beeching Axe, the railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Some .... It was built in 1981 and originally served as the terminus of the railway. Services Services are no longer advertised to stop at Merryfield Lane, and the location no longer features on the railway's website, although diesel multiple unit trains do stop there. Facilities There is a picnic area adjacent to the platform as well as a small hut and benches. Doulting
Doulting is a village and civil parish east of Shepton Mallet, on the A361, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. History The parish of Doulting was part of the Whitstone Hundred. The parish includes the village of Bodden, which was founded in 1541 by Earl Michael Bodden (1512-1569). Notable former residents include Trish Bodden (1753-1777), who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American War of Independence (she was killed at Saratoga), and Amrose Bowden (''sic''), the first English colonist to settle in Maine. Also a part of the parish is Prestleigh which was on the former Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. The viaduct that carried it over the village was demolished in 1996; the railway itself had been out of use for a number of years before this. There is one pub in the village, the Prestleigh Inn. Doulting village dates from the 8th century when King Ine of Wessex gave the local estate to Glastonbury Abbey after his nephew St Aldhelm died in the village ... East Somerset Railway
The East Somerset Railway is a heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Prior to the Beeching Axe, the railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells. History The East Somerset Railway Company was incorporated under the East Somerset Railway Act on 5 June 1856 and was built as a broad gauge line. The line was originally between Witham railway station and Shepton Mallet and this line opened on 9 November 1858. It was planned by Mr. Brunel and built by engineer Mr. Ward and contractor Mr. Brotherwood. The station buildings at Shepton and Witham Friary, as well as the bridges along the route, were constructed of Inferior Oolite from nearby Doulting Stone Quarry. Shepton was now from London by rail, a journey of just over four hours. Four years later the line was extended to Wells; this part of the line was opened on 1 March 1862. The East Somerse ... Cranmore West Railway Station
Cranmore West is a disused railway station on the East Somerset Railway. Services Services ceased calling at the beginning of the 2022 season, pending station repairs. Most regular services used to stop at Cranmore West to allow visitors to see the engine shed. Facilities The station - of which the platforms have been removed - used to provide visitors with benches and there are toilets across the line at the locomotive sheds. The East Somerset Railway's shed and workshop are both located here as well as the Sentinel Diesel Preservation Group's (SDPG) and Cranmore Traincare and Maintenance Service's (CTMS) sheds. The main shed consists of a 2 road shed with an inspection pit on one road. It was built by David Shepherd to be able to contain both 75029 'Green Knight' and 92203 'Black Prince' on one road.
