Cranmore West Railway Station
Cranmore West is a disused railway station on the East Somerset Railway. Services Services ceased calling at the beginning of the 2022 season, pending station repairs. Most regular services used to stop at Cranmore West to allow visitors to see the engine shed. Facilities The station - of which the platforms have been removed - used to provide visitors with benches and there are toilets across the line at the locomotive sheds. The East Somerset Railway's shed and workshop are both located here as well as the Sentinel Diesel Preservation Group's (SDPG) and Cranmore Traincare and Maintenance Service's (CTMS) sheds. The main shed consists of a 2 road shed with an inspection pit on one road. It was built by David Shepherd to be able to contain both 75029 'Green Knight' and 92203 'Black Prince' on one road. Cranmore, Somerset
Cranmore is a village and civil parish east of Shepton Mallet, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the hamlets of Waterlip, East Cranmore and Dean. History The name comes from ''Crane Mere'', the Lake of the Cranes. The parish of Cranmore was part of the hundred of Wells Forum. East Cranmore was part of the hundred of Frome. It is the base of the East Somerset Railway which plays host to a variety of preserved diesel and steam locomotives. It operates the line between Cranmore railway station, Cranmore West, Merryfield Lane Halt and Mendip Vale. The section between Cranmore and the mainline is used for heavy quarry traffic to the nearby Merehead Quarry. The quarry, which is also known as Torr Works, covers an area of some 200 hectares, including 60 hectares which have been landscaped to blend with the surrounding countryside. East Somerset Railway
The East Somerset Railway is a heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Prior to the Beeching Axe, the railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells. History The East Somerset Railway Company was incorporated under the East Somerset Railway Act on 5 June 1856 and was built as a broad gauge line. The line was originally between Witham railway station and Shepton Mallet and this line opened on 9 November 1858. It was planned by Mr. Brunel and built by engineer Mr. Ward and contractor Mr. Brotherwood. The station buildings at Shepton and Witham Friary, as well as the bridges along the route, were constructed of Inferior Oolite from nearby Doulting Stone Quarry. Cranmore Railway Station
Cranmore is the main railway station (and also the headquarters) of the preserved East Somerset Railway, in Somerset, England. Services Various services are provided throughout the year, mainly in the spring, summer and autumn months to Mendip Vale. Occasionally, specials are run to Westbury. The station also occasionally receives railtours from further afield such as London. The station was opened in 1858 to serve the village of Cranmore. Facilities The station originally consisted of just the station building located at the west end of the remaining platform (now a museum). The on-platform station house and main station building were both built during preservation and provide much better services to passengers. British Rail
British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was a state-owned company that operated most of the overground rail transport in Great Britain from 1948 to 1997.
