Merrill Heatter (screenwriter)
Merrill Gabriel Heatter (December 16, 1925 – October 8, 2017) was an American television producer and writer. He was best known for his collaboration with writer Bob Quigley for over 20 years and the formation of their production company Heatter-Quigley Productions in 1960. The company was responsible for the game shows ''Hollywood Squares'' and ''Gambit'' and the animated television series ''Wacky Races''. He also formed Merrill Heatter Productions in 1980, which is responsible for the ''Gambit''-based show ''Catch 21''. Early life Heatter was born in New York City, the son of Frances and Edward Heatter. His paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Austria. Heatter was the nephew of journalist Gabriel Heatter and the cousin of cook Maida Heatter. ''You Are There'' is a 1947–1957 American historical educational television and radio series broadcast over the CBS Radio and CBS Television networks. Radio Created by Goodman Ace for CBS Radio, it blended history with modern technology, taking an entire network newsroom on a figurative time warp each week reporting the great events of the past. Reporters included John Charles Daly, Don Hollenbeck, and Richard C. Hottelet. The series was first heard on July 7, 1947, under the title ''CBS Is There''. Its final broadcast was on March 19, 1950, under the title ''You Are There''. According to author/historian Martin Grams, actor Canada Lee was a guest in episodes 32 and 60. Dan Enright
Daniel Enright (né Ehrenreich; August 30, 1917 – May 22, 1992) was an American television producer, primarily of game shows. Enright worked with Jack Barry from the 1940s until Barry's death in 1984. They were partners in creating programs for radio and television. Their company was called Barry & Enright Productions. Enright (original surname Ehrenreich), who grew up in British Palestine and New York City, met up with Barry as the latter was working in stand-up comedy. After a stint at WOR radio, the two developed several early TV shows, including the seminal "interactive" show ''Winky Dink and You'', as well as ''Juvenile Jury'' and ''Life Begins at Eighty'', and ''Wisdom of the Ages''. Herbert Milton Stempel (December 19, 1926 – April 7, 2020) was an American television game show contestant and subsequent whistleblower on the fraudulent nature of the industry, in what became known as the 1950s quiz show scandals. His rigged six-week appearance as a winning contestant on the 1950s show '' Twenty-One'' ended in an equally rigged defeat by Columbia University teacher and literary scion Charles Van Doren. ''Twenty-One'' was an American game show originally hosted by Jack Barry that aired on NBC from 1956 to 1958. Produced by Jack Barry-Dan Enright Productions, two contestants competed against each other in separate isolation booths, answering general-knowledge questions to earn 21 total points. The program became notorious when it was found to be rigged as part of the 1950s quiz show scandals, which nearly caused the demise of the entire genre in the wake of United States Senate investigations. Jack Barry (born Jack Barasch; March 20, 1918 – May 2, 1984) was an American game show host, television personality and executive who made a name for himself in the game show field. Barry served as host of several game shows in his career, many of which he developed along with Dan Enright as part of their joint operation Barry & Enright Productions. Barry's reputation became tarnished due to his involvement in the 1950s quiz show scandals and the ensuing fallout affected his career for over a decade. These shows' producers secretly gave assistance to certain contestants in order to prearrange the shows’ outcomes while still attempting to deceive the public into believing that these shows were objective and fair competitions. Producers fixed the shows sometimes with the free consent of contestants and out of various motives: improving Audience measurement, ratings, greed, and the lack of regulations prohibiting such conspiracy in game show productions. Harlow Wilcox (March 12, 1900 – September 24, 1960) was an American radio announcer. Wilcox became one of the most successful announcers and pitchmen in radio and he was a pioneer in making commercials part of a program's story. Wilcox also had roles on television and film.
