Mentz, Texas
Mentz is an unincorporated community in northeastern Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is situated northeast of Columbus on the north side of Interstate 10 (I-10). The town was first established in 1846 by German immigrants from near Mainz, Germany. The small community was still served by a Catholic church in 2016. Geography Mentz is located at the intersection of Mentz and Frelsburg roads, approximately northeast of Columbus, and the Saint Roch Catholic Church is nearby. The community is north of the intersection of I-10, with Farm to Market Road 949 (FM 949) and west of Bernardo. History As early as the 1830s, Germans began to settle near Cat Spring to the northeast.See photo of historical marker. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. Alleyton, Texas
Alleyton is an unincorporated community in central Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It adjoins Columbus, Texas. Geography Alleyton is located about 405 meters north of the Colorado River at its closest point. It is east of Columbus on south Interstate 10. It is bounded on the north by I-10, the south and west by Alleyton Road, and the east by FM-102. Alleyton's elevation stays at approximately 57 meters with a seven-meter decline to the river. History In 1821, the area which would become Alleyton - prehistorically settled by Native Americans - was happened upon by Rawson Alley. Alley was a pioneer settler born to Thomas Alley in 1793, who later surveyed the land which would become the headquarters of Stephen F. Austin's colony. He was granted a league and a half as one of the Old Three Hundred of Austin's colony. This land, five miles south of Columbus, would become Alleyton. The Congregation of Divine Providence (or Sisters of Divine Providence) is the name of two Roman Catholic religious institutes of women which have developed from the work of the Blessed Jean-Martin Moye (1730-1793), a French Catholic priest. They are dedicated to the instruction and care of the neediest of the world. Moye saw the lack of educational opportunities for females in the rural sectors of his large parish in the then Duchy of Lorraine, soon to be a part of France. It took its final form in 1852. Bingen am Rhein () is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The settlement's original name was Bingium, a Celtic word that may have meant "hole in the rock", a description of the shoal behind the ''Mäuseturm'', known as the ''Binger Loch''. Frelsburg is an unincorporated community in Colorado County, Texas, United States. It lies at the intersection of Farm to Market Road 109 and Farm to Market Road 1291. The community was founded around 1837 by immigrants from Germany. It is home to one of the oldest surviving general stores in Texas. Continuously operated since 1865 and owned by the Heinsohn family since 1920, the store is called Heinsohn's Country Store. Cat Spring, Texas
Cat Spring is an unincorporated community in southern Austin County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, it had a population of 76 in 2000. Cat Spring was one of the first German/American settlements in Texas, and the location of Texas' first agricultural society. History Cat Spring was founded by immigrants from Oldenburg and Westphalia that was led by Ludwig Anton Siegmund von Roeder and Robert J. Kleberg in 1834, in which many of them were attracted to the area and the state by letters sent from Friedrich Ernst after he bought a plot of land in the Mill Creek Valley in 1831 and named for a nearby spring near the San Bernard River where a puma was killed by one of the German immigrants. Bernardo, Texas
Bernardo is an unincorporated community in northeastern Colorado County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The small community is located on FM 949 between Interstate 10 (I-10) and Cat Spring. The town was first settled by German immigrants in the 1840s and was on a main east-west road as early as the Civil War. Though the community once had its own post office and school, these had long disappeared by 2013. A United States Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5' x 7.5' Quadrangle Map is named Bernardo. Geography The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) locates Bernardo at which is the intersection of FM 949 and New Ulm Road.
