Mena, Arkansas
Mena ( ) is a city in Polk County, Arkansas, United States. It is also the county seat of Polk County. The population was 5,558 as of the 2020 census. Mena is included in the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region. Surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest, Mena is a gateway to some of the most visited tourist attractions in Arkansas. History Mena was founded by Arthur Edward Stilwell during the building of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (now the Kansas City Southern), which stretched from Kansas City, Missouri to Port Arthur, Texas. Train service to Mena began in 1896. Stilwell named the town in honor of Folmina Margaretha Janssen-De Goeijen, the wife of his friend and financier Jan De Goeijen, whom Mr. De Goeijen affectionately called Mena. Dallas, Arkansas
Dallas is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Arkansas, United States. The community is approximately three miles south of Mena. History Pioneers arrived in Polk County around 1830, mainly from Tennessee, Illinois and Kentucky. They settled near Dallas, surviving off the area's abundant wild game, and building shelters from its rich timber resources. Polk County was created by the state's General Assembly in 1844, with Dallas as its county seat. The village was named for Vice-President George M. Dallas. The first Polk County courthouse was located in Dallas, but was destroyed by fire. In 1869 a second courthouse was built, which was also destroyed by fire, in 1883. Janssen Park
Janssen Park is a municipal park in the heart of the city of Mena, Arkansas. It is bounded by Janssen and Port Arthur Avenues, and 9th and 7th Streets. The park is a large grassy expanse with occasional mature trees, and features walkways radiating from a central drive, which circles around Mena's oldest building, the c. 1850s Shelton log cabin. A pair of ponds are located in the park's southern quadrant, and there is a clocktower within the circle near the cabin. The park was laid out in 1896, the year of the city's founding, but was not properly developed until ten years later. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. De Queen ( ) is a city and the county seat of Sevier County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 6,629 at the 2010 census. The placename is the anglicization of the family name of the Dutch merchant and railway financier, Jan de Goeijen (1861–1944). De Goeijen was reportedly rather unhappy with the deformation of his name. Geography De Queen is located at (34.039994, −94.341964). Port Arthur, Texas
Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County; it is east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery, is located in Port Arthur. The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census, down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. By 2020, its population rebounded to 56,039. Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. The Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad was a railway company that began operations in the 1890s and owned a main-line between Kansas City, Missouri, and Port Arthur, Texas. Arthur Edward Stilwell
Arthur Edward Stilwell (October 21, 1859 – September 26, 1928) was the founder of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad, predecessor to the Kansas City Southern Railway. He served as KCPG's president from 1897 to 1900. He was also the founder of Port Arthur, Texas. Early life Stilwell was born in Rochester, New York, in 1859. While working as a traveling salesman he courted and married Jennie A. Wood, and the couple moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and then Chicago, Illinois, where Arthur sold insurance for the Travelers Insurance Company, inventing a coupon annuity life-insurance policy which paid the policy holder an income after a certain age.
