Members Of The 11th Seanad
This is a list of the members of the 11th Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland. These Senators were elected or appointed in 1965, after the 1965 general election and served until the close of poll for the 12th Seanad in 1969. Composition of the 11th Seanad There are a total of 60 seats in the Seanad. 43 Senators are elected by the Vocational panels, 6 elected by the Universities and 11 are nominated by the Taoiseach. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. It has been located, since its establishment, in Leinster House. Fine Gael
Fine Gael (, ; English: "Family (or Tribe) of the Irish") is a liberal-conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Fine Gael is currently the third-largest party in the Republic of Ireland in terms of members of Dáil Éireann and largest in terms of Irish members of the European Parliament. The party has a membership of 25,000 in 2021. Leo Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as party leader on 2 June 2017 and as Taoiseach on 14 June; Kenny had been leader since 2002, and Taoiseach since 2011. Seán Browne
Seán Browne (3 May 1916 – 27 March 1996) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Wexford constituency – first elected in 1957. Early and personal life Browne was a prominent member of the GAA. He served as chairman of Wexford County Board for 21 years. Seán Browne was the uncle of John Browne, a TD representing the Wexford constituency from 1982 to 2016. Political career Browne was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil TD for the Wexford constituency at the 1957 general election. He was defeated at the 1961 election, and was unsuccessful again at the 1965 general election. However, after his 1961 defeat he was elected to the 10th Seanad on the Labour Panel, which returned him in 1965 to the 11th Seanad. Browne regained his Dáil seat at the 1969 general election. John Conlan (Monaghan Politician)
John Francis Conlan (21 May 1928 – 3 December 2004) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, grocer and publican. He was elected to Seanad Éireann in 1965 on the Industrial and Commercial Panel. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) at the 1969 general election for the Monaghan constituency. He was re-elected at each subsequent general election (for Cavan–Monaghan from 1977) until he lost his seat at the 1987 general election. Conlan was also a member of Monaghan County Council from 1955 until 1999 and was its chairman on two occasions. He was also a member of Ballybay Town Commissioners from 1950 until 1991 and served as chairman of that body for many years. Michael O'Kennedy (21 February 1936 – 15 April 2022) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Minister for Labour from 1991 to 1992, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1987 to 1991, European Commissioner for Personnel, Administration and the Statistics Office from 1981 to 1982, Minister for Finance and Minister for the Public Service from 1979 to 1980, Minister for Economic Planning and Development from 1979 to 1980, Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1977 to 1979, Minister for Transport and Power from January 1973 to March 1973, minister without portfolio from 1972 to 1973 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education from 1970 to 1973. Dáil Éireann ( , ; ) is the lower house, and principal chamber, of the Oireachtas (Irish legislature), which also includes the President of Ireland and Seanad Éireann (the upper house).Article 15.1.2º of the Constitution of Ireland reads: "The Oireachtas shall consist of the President and two Houses, viz.: a House of Representatives to be called Dáil Éireann and a Senate to be called Seanad Éireann." Patrick O'Reilly (Cavan Politician)
Patrick O'Reilly (6 April 1906 – 19 February 1994) was an Irish politician. A farmer by profession, he was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1943 general election as a Clann na Talmhan Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cavan constituency and was re-elected at the 1944 general election. Farrell McElgunn
Farrell McElgunn (5 January 1932 – 2 March 2020) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and teacher. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in University College Galway in Irish and History, and later completed a masters of Irish in St Patrick's College, Maynooth. He was also a local historian. He taught in the Rosary High School, Presentation Brothers and Marymount College in Carrick-on-Shannon where he was vice-principal. He was nominated by the Taoiseach to the 11th Seanad on 21 November 1968. He stood as a Fianna Fáil candidate at the 1969 general election for the Roscommon–Leitrim constituency but was unsuccessful. Leader Of The Seanad
The Leader of the Seanad (referred to within the Seanad as Leader of the House ga, Treoraí an Tí) is a member of Seanad Éireann appointed by the Taoiseach to direct government business. Since December 2022, the incumbent is Lisa Chambers of Fianna Fáil. The Deputy leader of the Seanad is Regina Doherty of Fine Gael. Margaret Mary Pearse
Margaret Mary Pearse (4 August 1878 – 7 November 1968) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and teacher. She was the sister of Patrick and Willie Pearse, two of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Early life Margaret Mary Pearse was born at 27 Great Brunswick Street, in Dublin, the eldest child of James Pearse and Margaret Pearse (née Brady). She grew up in cramped living conditions as often the other rooms in the house were rented to subtenants, leaving the Pearse family to share one room. During her childhood, Margaret was very friendly with James Vincent, her half-brother from her father's previous marriage. Their close relationship did not follow into adulthood. Cathaoirleach (; Irish for chairperson; plural: ) is the title of the chair (or presiding officer) of Seanad Éireann, the sixty-member upper house of the Oireachtas, the legislature of Ireland. The 1969 Irish general election to the 19th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 18 June, following the Dissolution of Parliament, dissolution of the 18th Dáil on 22 May by President of Ireland, President Éamon de Valera on the request of Taoiseach Jack Lynch.
