Melrose Athletic Club
The Melrose Athletic Club was a professional football team based in Atlantic City, New Jersey from 1921 until around 1927. The club which was also known as the Atlantic City Roses and the Atlantic City Atlantics was arguably the most popular football team in New Jersey during the 1920s. Due to the team's location in Atlantic City, the Roses attracted several of the teams from the Anthracite League, based in Pennsylvania, as well as the Canton Bulldogs, Frankford Yellow Jackets, Pottsville Maroons and Rochester Jeffersons of the National Football League. From 1926 until 1927 Melrose joined the Eastern League of Professional Football. The team would later return to the independent circuit after the league folded in 1927. During the 1927 season the Roses acquired many players from the now-defunct Philadelphia Quakers who were named American Football League a year earlier. George Sullivan (American Football, Born 1897)
George Henry Sullivan (March 15, 1897 – July 5, 1989) was an American football back who played two seasons with the Frankford Yellow Jackets of the National Football League. He played college football at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Quakers and Atlantic City Roses. Professional career Frankford Yellow Jackets Sullivan played in 22 games, starting twelve, for the Frankford Yellow Jackets from 1924 to 1925. Philadelphia Quakers Sullivan played in eight games, starting six, for the Philadelphia Quakers of the American Football League during the 1926 season. The AFL folded after the 1926 season. The Orange Tornadoes and Newark Tornadoes were two manifestations of a long-lived professional American football franchise that existed in some form from 1887 to 1941 and from 1958 to 1970, having played in the American Amateur Football Union from 1888 to 1895, the National Football League from 1929 to 1930, the American Association (football), American Association from 1936 to 1941, the Atlantic Coast Football League from 1963 to 1964 and 1970, and the Continental Football League from 1965 to 1969. Bader Field
Bader Field , also known as Atlantic City Municipal Airport, was a city-owned public-use general aviation airport located in Atlantic City, in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. It was approximately one mile from the terminus of U.S. Route 40 and U.S. Route 322. The city purchased the land for the airfield in 1922. It was named after the former mayor of Atlantic City, Edward L. Bader. Bader Field permanently closed on September 30, 2006. The field as of 2016 was for sale. The first use of term of "air port" anywhere was used in 1919 to describe this field. Located less than a mile across the Intracoastal Waterway from the landmark original Convention Hall, it was Atlantic City's principal airport during the city's Miss America golden age. William C. "Whitey" Thomas (August 17, 1895 – August 1978) was an American football end. He played for the Frankford Yellow Jackets in 1924 in the National Football League and for the Philadelphia Quakers in 1926 in the first American Football League. Thomas also played for the Yellow Jackets in 1922 and in 1923, before the team became members of the NFL. He played college football for Penn State, before playing professionally. End (American Football)
An end in American and Canadian football is a player who lines up at either end of the line of scrimmage, usually beside the tackles. Rules state that a legal offensive formation must always consist of seven players on the line of scrimmage and that the player on the end of the line constitutes an eligible receiver. Before the advent of two platoons, in which teams fielded distinct defensive and offensive units, players that lined up on the ends of the line on both offense and defense were referred to simply as "ends". The position was used in this sense until roughly the 1960s. On offense, an end who lines up close to the other linemen is known as a tight end and is the only lineman who aside from blocking can run or catch passes.
