Mellissa Channell
Mellissa Channell (born December 16, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for PWHL Minnesota of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She previously played for the Toronto Furies of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). She played college ice hockey at Wisconsin. Early life Channell was born and raised in Canada before moving to Michigan to play hockey. She played two years with the Detroit Little Caesars U-16 program, and one year with the Little Caesar's U-19 team that won the state championship her freshman year of high school. She then played for the Burlington Barracudas of the Provincial Women's Hockey League for two seasons, where she recorded seven goals and 30 assists in 57 games. College career Channell began her collegiate career with the Wisconsin Badgers during the 2013–14 season. Minnesota are a professional ice hockey team based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They are one of the six charter franchises of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). History It was revealed on August 29, 2023, that one of the PWHL's first six franchises would be located in Minnesota. Natalie Darwitz, former captain of the United States women's national ice hockey team, United States national team and three-time Olympic medalist, was named the team's general manager. 2023–24 PWHL Season
The 2023–24 PWHL season was the first season of operation of the Professional Women's Hockey League, and began play on January 1, 2024. Six teams competed during the inaugural season, located in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Ottawa, and Minneapolis–Saint Paul. The season culminated in a two-round best-of-five playoff including the top four teams to determine the season champion. PWHL Toronto topped the regular season standings with 17 wins and 47 points. In the playoffs, PWHL Minnesota won the inaugural Walter Cup, defeating PWHL Boston in a 5-game series for the title. 2023 PWHL Draft
The 2023 PWHL Draft was the first draft in Professional Women's Hockey League history, and took place on September 18, 2023, at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Taylor Heise was the first player chosen in the draft, selected by Minnesota. In all, 90 players were selected over 15 rounds of drafting. Professional Women's Hockey Players Association
The Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization dedicated to advocating for the promotion of professional women's ice hockey. It was founded in May 2019 following the dissolution of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, which only paid stipends, and player's dissatisfaction in the operations of the National Women's Hockey League. Their goal is to create a sustainable professional league for women's ice hockey in North America. The 2018–19 CWHL season was the 12th and final season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. 2018 CWHL Draft
The 2018 CWHL Draft, the ninth and final in league history, took place on August 26. It marked the first and only draft Jayna Hefford served as CWHL commissioner. The CWHL indicated that general managers were authorized to "pre-sign" their first and second round selections before the draft. The window for pre-signing expired on August 17.
