Melbourne Railway Station (United Kingdom)
Melbourne railway station was a station at Kings Newton that served the adjacent town of Melbourne, Derbyshire, England. History It was opened in 1868 as the terminus of a Midland Railway branch from . In 1874 it became a through station as the line was extended to a junction on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line near . In 1930 passenger services were withdrawn and the Midland's successor, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, was using the line only for freight services. During the Second World War the line became the Melbourne Military Railway and Melbourne station became its headquarters. In 1945 the War Department (United Kingdom), War Department returned the line and station to the LMS. In 1980 British Railways closed the line and by the 1990s the track had been dismantled. Kings Newton
Kings Newton is a village in South Derbyshire. The population of the village is included in Melbourne, Derbyshire, Melbourne. The Holy well (pictured) was constructed around 1660, but has been refurbished at the end of the twentieth century. History Unlike many villages in Derbyshire, Kings Newton is not mentioned in the Domesday book and is a "new town". Originally the hamlet was called Newton but the prefix of ''Kings'' was added to differentiate it from other ''Newtons'' in the surrounding counties. After the successful campaign at the Battle of Sobraon, Henry Hardinge was created Viscount Hardinge of Lahore and of King's Newton in Derbyshire, with a pension of £3000 for three lives. Why this small village was chosen for his honour is unclear. The hall illustrated was built in 1560 and was extensively damaged by fire in 1859. Route Parts of the route are currently incomplete and some sections follow other routes. London to Milton Keynes The proposed route is to begin in central London, running from via Paddington railway station to the Grand Union Canal.
