Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio
The Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) is an Australian independent non-profit arts organization founded by sound artists Robin Fox (Australian musician), Robin Fox and Byron J Scullin in 2016. MESS features a collection of synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronic instruments which are available to use. The instruments in their collection are on loan from local musicians, including major contributions from Tony Osmond and Gotye, Goyte. Due to the size of the collection, only a third can be displayed at one time, so are rotated regularly. Access to MESS is provided through an annual membership, allowing members to book out instruments and play them or record with them in the space. Notable international musicians who have visited include Legowelt, Clark (musician), Clark, and David Chesworth who was their artist in residence in 2017. Robin Fox (Australian Musician)
Robin Fox is an Australian musician. He has released several solo albums as well as collaborations with Anthony Pateras and Oren Ambarchi. His work with Anthony Pateras has been noted for making a significant contribution to noise music. His mother was an experimental music composer and his stepfather ran the computer music department at La Trobe University. After dropping out of law school, Robin decided to focus on music inspired by his mother's work. He later returned to studying and has a PhD in composition from Monash University and an MA in musicology, with published articles on experimental music and composition. He has collaborated with his partner choreographer Stephanie Lake on several dance works, and has created sound and light-shows for Australian contemporary dance company Chunky Move. Legowelt
Legowelt (real name Danny Wolfers) is a Dutch composer, electronic musician and visual artist, whose music spawns a varying range of sub-genres. Life Danny Wolfers was born in The Hague, The Netherlands and grew up in the coastal neighbourhood of Scheveningen. Career Music Danny Wolfers has released projects on various labels and under over 40 different aliases, including on Bunker records, Clone, L.I.E.S, P.P.U. , and Rush Hour. Around 1999, Legowelt started releasing a number of LPs and EPs on The Hague's Bunker Records. Bunker released Legowelt's first vinyl album ''Pimpshifter.'' Sidney Myer Music Bowl
The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is an outdoor bandshell performance venue in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located in the lawns and gardens of Kings Domain on Linlithgow Avenue close to the Arts Centre and the Southbank entertainment precinct. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies, on 12 February 1959, with an audience of 30,000 people. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. History The businessman and philanthropist Sidney Myer inspired the construction of the building after attending the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. A violinist who enjoyed music, Myer established free open-air concerts with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1929, which were always well attended by Melburnians. Grainger Museum
The Grainger Museum is a repository of items documenting the life, career and music of the composer, folklorist, educator and pianist Percy Grainger (b. Melbourne, 1882; d. White Plains, New York, 1961), located in the grounds of the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In the early 1920s, Grainger began to develop an idea for an autobiographical museum so that "all very intimate letters or notes should be deposited in an Australian Grainger Museum, preferably in birth-town Melbourne". Grainger was a linguistic purist, advocating for the use of a 'Blue-Eyed English' derived from Anglo-Saxon and Germanic glossary. The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals that was founded in 1998 by Red Bull GmbH. The main five-week event is held in a different city each year. The public portion of its program is a festival of concerts, art installations, club nights and lectures by influential figures in contemporary music. The other part of the program is by invitation only and is held in a building that has been custom-fitted with a large recording studio, a lecture hall, a radio booth and 8–12 bedroom-sized studios. David Chesworth (born 1958, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom) is an Australian-based interdisciplinary artist and composer. Known for his experimental and at times minimalist music, he has worked solo, in post-punk groups (Essendon Airport, Whadya Want?), electronic music, contemporary ensembles and experimental performance. Christopher Stephen Clark (born 29 August 1979) is a British electronic musician, performing under the mononym Clark. He has produced music for his own albums, as well as music for television, films and video games, having composed scores for award-winning contemporary dance and BAFTA nominated TV series. Byron J Scullin is an Australian composer and sound designer. His sound design work has appeared in performances and exhibitions at National Gallery of Victoria, Rising Festival, and Dark Mofo. His 2015 Dark Mofo art piece ''Bass Bath'' was a collaboration with the company Supple Fox, made up of Hannah Fox and Tom Supple. The work featured eight "2100 horsepower monolithic subwoofers" in the space which audience members could move around to change their experience, with the low tones causing a physical sensation across their body. In 2017 he returned to Dark Mofo with Supple Fox. Their art piece ''Siren Songs'' included 450 speakers and a helicopter broadcasting sound around the city as part of the performance which ''The Guardian'' called "eerie, dark and beautiful."
