Melaniellaceae
The Melaniellaceae are a family of fungi in the division Basidiomycota and order of Doassansiales. The family contains 1 genera and 2 species. They have a distribution in south and south-east Asia. History In 1999, mycologists using rRNA gene sequencing and morphology analysis on two known smut species on ''Selaginella'' plants, ''Melanotaenium oreophilum'' and ''Melanotaenium selaginellae'', and the host-parasite interaction with the Doassansiales. They found the new species were different and created a new genus ''Melaniella'' and 2 new species to place them. They are highly unusual, as there are only five out of the 1200 estimated known species of smut fungus that are found on hosts that are not flowering plants. Robert Bauer (mycologist)
Robert Bauer (1950 – 8 September 2014) was a German mycologist, specialising in rust ( Uredinales) and smut ( Ustilaginomycetes) fungi. Bauer studied Biology at the University of Tübingen during the 1970s, and a particular interest in plants and fungi led to completing his PhD there in 1983, with a doctoral dissertation entitled ' (''Experimental-ontogenetic and karyological studies on Uredinales''). He went on to become chair of "Systematic Botany and Mycology" (now "Evolutionary Ecology of Plants") in the "Institute of Evolution and Ecology" at Tübingen. He became adept in the use of electron microscopes and the prerequisite specialised cutting and preparation techniques at a time when ultrastructural study of fungi was still in its infancy. Ustilaginomycotina
The Ustilaginomycotina is a subdivision within the division Basidiomycota of the kingdom Fungi. It consists of the classes Ustilaginomycetes and Exobasidiomycetes, and in 2014 the subdivision was reclassified and the two additional classes Malasseziomycetes and Moniliellomycetes added. The name was first published by Doweld in 2001; Bauer and colleagues later published it in 2006 as an isonym. Ustilagomycotina and Agaricomycotina are considered to be sister groups, and they are in turn sister groups to the subdivision Pucciniomycotina. Ustilaginomycotina comprises 115 genera with more than 1700 species. The subdivision is mostly plant parasites on vascular plants, and the distribution of the subdivision is therefore restricted to the distribution of the host. Hans Sydow (29 January 1879 – 6 June 1946) was a German mycologist and the son of mycologist and lichenologist, Paul Sydow (1851–1925). Career Hans Sydow worked at the Dresdner Bank in Berlin between 1904 and 1937 rising to divisional manager in 1922. Before, during and after this time he also pursued a career as a mycologist. Together with his father he co-authored many works before his father's death in 1925, most substantial of which were four volumes of monographs on the Uredinales (now called ''Pucciniales''), ' (''Monograph on the Uredinales, description of known species and outline of systematics''). In biology, a sterigma (pl. sterigmata) is a small supporting structure. It commonly refers to an extension of the basidium (the spore-bearing cells) consisting of a basal filamentous part and a slender projection which carries a spore at the tip. A basidium () is a microscopic sporangium (a spore-producing structure) found on the hymenophore of fruiting bodies of basidiomycete fungi which are also called tertiary mycelium, developed from secondary mycelium.
