Melamchi River
Melamchi River (Nepali: मेलम्चि खोला) is a tributary of the Indrawati River. It originates from the Jugal Himal at an elevation of about amsl. It joins with the Indrawati River at Melamchi Bazaar. Morphology The Melamchi River is long and has a catchment area of up to the confluence. The river flows southwards and widens downstream. Hydrology The mean annual flow is 9.7 m3/s. The maximum flow is 289 m3/s. Infrastructure * Melamchi Water Supply Project in the river diverts water from the river to Kathmandu for drinking. Incidents * In June 2021, a flood of the river damaged the Melamchi Bazaar killing several locals and some foreigners. Melamchi Water Supply Project
Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) is a project to supply drinking water to Kathmandu Valley by diverting of water per day. The project started in 1998 and completed in 2021. The intake of this project is located in Melamchi, Nepal. Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (Nepal) is the executing agency for the Project and Melamchi Water Supply Development Board is the implementing agency. This project was mainly financed by Japan and the Asian Development Bank. About 57% of the project cost was loan, 16% was grant and 26% was financed by the Nepalese government. Project description The intake of the project lies in the Melamchi valley in the gorge below Ghwakan, just upstream of the confluence of Melamchi River and Ribarma Khola. Melamchi
Melamchi is a municipality in Sindhupalchok District in the Bagmati Province of central Nepal. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 3936 and had 710 houses in the village. Government of Nepal has initiated a drinking water project called Melamchi water supply project to Kathmandu Valley. The Melamchi Valley is typically narrow, steep Himalayan River-Valley. The lower valley slopes are very steep, rocky and "V" shaped in the High Mountain whereas in the Middle the valley slopes are dissected by rolling alluvial tars at the bottom. The middle mountain slopes, have gentler aspect and are the sites of settlements. The upper mountain slopes are very steep, rocky and with pointed ridgeline. 2021 Melamchi Flood
In June 2021, the flood in Melamchi River caused damage in the Melamchi Bazar in Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal killing several locals and some foreigners Cause Based on the early research, the loose material on the upstream part of the Melamchi River activated due to the long monsoon rain. Sindhupalchowk being one of the most affected districts in 2015 earthquake, it is suggested that the mountain relaxation activated the debris flow. The continuous rainfall triggered numerous landslides around Melamchi. Melamchi River was blocked by one of the landslides for few hours creating Landslide dam. This dam burst generating flash flood with mix of debris mixture with sand, boulders and wood fragments. The local authority issued a warning after sensing the river damming and locals were instructed to move up to higher ground. The flood hit the Melamchi bazar at night after 8 or 9 pm.
