Meißner, Hesse
Meißner (or ''Meissner'') is a municipality in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis in Hesse, Germany. Geography Location Meißner lies at the Krösselberg between the Hoher Meißner and the Werra valley in the Meißner-Kaufunger Wald Nature Park, some 40 km southeast of Kassel and 10 km west of Eschwege. Neighbouring communities Meißner borders in the north on the community of Berkatal, in the east on the town of Eschwege, in the south on the community of Wehretal and the town of Waldkappel and in the west on the town of Hessisch Lichtenau (all in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis). Hoher Meißner
The Hoher Meißner is a mountain massif with a height of 753.6 m and is located in the '' Meißner-Kaufunger Wald'' nature park in Hesse, Germany. Geography The Hoher Meißner is densely forested and covers an area of 10 km by 5 km. It is located approximately between Eschwege and Grossalmerode as well as Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Waldkappel. Together with large parts of the Kaufungen Forest and the Soehre forest it forms the very extensive Naturpark Meißner-Kaufunger Wald. Geology In the Tertiary period the area was covered by thick forests. From these forests, lignite deposits were formed, which were then covered by sand and lava. The basalt formations have been eroded by weathering and were much higher at one time. Werra-Meißner-Kreis
Werra-Meißner is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the north of Hesse, Germany. Neighboring districts are Göttingen, Eichsfeld, Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis, Wartburgkreis, district-free Eisenach, Hersfeld-Rotenburg, Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, Kassel. History The district was created in 1974 by merging the two districts of Eschwege and Witzenhausen, which had both existed with only slight modifications since 1821. Geography The main river in the district is the Werra. The Hoher Meißner at is the highest elevation of the Meißner mountains, a big basalt massif, the other geographical feature which gave the district its name. The Hoher Meissner was also home to US military forces up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Soldiers of the Special Forces guarded the eavesdropping post on the hilltop. Heike Meißner
Brigitte Heike Meissner (german: Meißner, born 29 January 1970 in Dresden) is a retired German athlete. She competed mainly in the 400 metres hurdles, but also spent two seasons specializing in the 800 metres. Notable achievements include a silver medal at the 2002 European Championships, medals in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1994 European Championships and the 1997 World Indoor Championships and a fourth place at the 1995 World Championships. She won the 400 metres hurdles bronze medal at the 1989 European Junior Championships. She also helped win the 4 x 400 m relay with the East German team. Her first World Championships participation came in 1991. Here, she finished seventh in the 400 m hurdles. August Gottlieb Meißner
August Gottlieb Meissner (3 November 1753 – 18 February 1807) was a German writer of the Enlightenment and is considered the founder of the German detective story. Life Meissner was born in Bautzen. His father (died 1761) was a government quartermaster. From 1764 to 1772 he attended the school in Löbau and graduated in law at the University of Wittenberg on 18 September 1772. In 1774 he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he finished his studies in 1776. During his studies he developed a passion for the theater and poetry. At the urging of his mother he went to Dresden, where he joined the Federation of Free Masons. After a journey through Austria in 1785 he was offered the position of professor of aesthetics and classical literature at the University of Prague. In 1805 he went to Fulda to take up the position of director of the school, which he retained until his death. He died in Fulda, aged 53. Heinrich August Meissner
Heinrich August Meissner (german: Heinrich August Meißner, January 3, 1862 – January 14, 1940) was a German engineer who was largely responsible for the railway network in the Ottoman Empire, and later helped manage the network in Turkey. He attained the high-ranking honorary title of pasha in the empire. Personal life Meissner was born in Leipzig in 1862. He studied at the Dresden University of Technology. Interested in the public works being planned in Turkey, he studied the Turkish language, and at the age of 24 moved to the Ottoman Empire. Meissner died in 1940 in Istanbul. Alexander Meissner (in German: Alexander Meißner) (September 14, 1883 – January 3, 1958) was an Austrian engineer and physicist. He was born in Vienna and died in Berlin. His field of interest was: antenna design, amplification and detection advanced the development of radio telegraphy. Georg Meissner
George Meissner (19 November 1829 – 30 March 1905) was a German anatomist and physiologist born in Hanover. He studied medicine at the University of Göttingen, where he worked closely with Rudolf Wagner (1806–1864). In 1851 he accompanied Wagner and Theodor Billroth (1829–1894) on an expedition to Trieste, where he performed scientific studies of torpedo fish. In 1852 he earned his doctorate at Göttingen, and was later a university professor at Basel (from 1855), Freiburg (from 1857) and Göttingen (1860–1901). His name is associated with Meissner's corpuscles, which are mechanoreceptors that are responsible for sensitivity to light touch. They were first described in 1852, with Meissner and Wagner each feeling that he alone should be given priority as to discovery of the corpuscles. Greg Meisner
Gregory Paul Meisner (born April 23, 1959) is a former American football defensive lineman and current high school athletics director. From 1981 to 1991, Meisner played for the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants of the National Football League. Meisner graduated from Valley High School at New Kensington, Pennsylvania in 1977. He helped the Rams win the 1985 NFC West Division. The Chiefs defense he played with in 1989 led the AFC in fewest total yards allowed and fewest passing yards allowed. In 11 seasons he had 12 sacks, one interception for 20 yards and a kickoff return for 17 yards. Meisner was the head coach of the Hempfield Area High School football team in Greensburg, Pennsylvania with a record of (17-50) by the time he resigned on November 18, 2011; however, he is still the Athletic Director.
