Meina
Meina is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Novara in the Italian region of Piedmont, located about northwest of Milan, about northeast of Turin and about north of Novara, on the southern area of Lake Maggiore. During World War II, Meina was the site of the massacre of 16 Italian Jews by German SS soldiers as part of the Lake Maggiore massacres. Lake Maggiore Massacres
The Lake Maggiore massacres was a set of World War II war crimes that took place near Lake Maggiore, Italy, in September and October 1943. Despite strict orders not to commit any violence against civilians in the aftermath of the Italian surrender on 8 September 1943, members of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler murdered 56, predominantly Italian and Greek, Jews. Many of the bodies were sunk into the lake to prevent discovery but one washed ashore in neighbouring Switzerland, drawing international attention to the massacre and prompting an inconclusive divisional inquiry. It is commonly referred to as the first German massacre of Jews in Italy during World War II. The war crime was subject to a trial in West Germany in 1968 in which five of the accused were found guilty but later controversially released after a verdict by the German high court which ruled that the statute of limitations for the case had expired. Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore (, ; it, Lago Maggiore ; lmo, label=Western Lombard, Lagh Maggior; pms, Lagh Magior; literally 'Greater Lake') or Verbano (; la, Lacus Verbanus) is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. Carlo Lizzani (3 April 1922 – 5 October 2013) was an Italian film director, screenwriter and critic. Biography Born in Rome, before World War II Lizzani worked as a scenarist on such films as Roberto Rossellini's ''Germany Year Zero'', Alberto Lattuada's '' The Mill on the Po'' (both 1948) and Giuseppe De Santis' ''Bitter Rice'' (1949), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story. Ofer Lellouche ( he, עופר ללוש, born 19 April 1947 in Tunis) is an Israeli painter, sculptor, etcher and video artist. Biography Lellouche was born in Tunisia in 1947. He studied mathematics and physics in Paris at Saint Louis College. In 1966, two months before he was scheduled to graduate, he ran away to Kibbutz Yehiam in Israel. In 1968, during his service in the Israel Defense Forces, he contracted hepatitis and began to paint while recovering. He began his formal art training at the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv under the abstract lyrical painter Yehezkiel Streichman. He returned to Paris to study with the sculptor César Baldaccini (1921-1998) and earn a master's degree in literature with a thesis on Stéphane Mallarmé.
