Meiderich
Meiderich is a quarter of the city of Duisburg. It is divided into Unter-, Mittel- and Obermeiderich. Meiderich belongs to the city district Meiderich/Beeck, which started in 1975, during the course of municipal reorganization. On 31 December 2004, 75,000 people lived in the district. Meiderich/Beeck has seven quarters: Beeck, Beeckerwerth, Bruckhausen, Laar, Mittel-, Ober- and Untermeiderich. Meiderich was first mentioned in the beginning of the 10th century as "Medriki", that means "moist area", in a document of the Werden Abbey. The first church was built in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages there was the village Meiderich surrounded by seven areas of accumulated farms: Berchum, Berg, Borkhofen, Dümpten, Lakum, Lösort and Vohwinkel. The association-football club MSV Duisburg, currently taking part in the third division ("Dritte Liga") in Germany is based in Meiderich; the club's name MSV is derived from "Meidericher Spielverein". Duisburg () is a city in the Ruhr metropolitan area of the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Beeckerwerth
Beeckerwerth is a part of the German city of Duisburg and located right of the Rhine. It has a population of 3,807 and an area of 7.62 km2. History Until the Middle Ages, Beeckerwerth was surrounded by water on all sides: on the west and northwest by the Rhine, on the east and northeast by the Emscher and on the south by a branch of the Emscher called the Monnarde. This is the origin of the name of Beeckerwerth which means "Island of Beeck" in Old German. The house of Beeck ruled over Beeckerwerth since the 13th century. Their castle, Haus Knipp, was first mentioned in 1292. It served as their court until its destruction in 1571. It was rebuilt further inland in 1620. Beeckerwerth became a borough of Duisburg on 1 October 1905, together with Beeck, Laar and Ruhrort. The industrialist August Thyssen purchased most of Beeckerwerth, including Haus Knipp, in the early 20th century. Haus Knipp was destroyed in 1939 when the dam was extended. Werden Abbey
Werden Abbey (german: Kloster Werden) was a Benedictine monastery in Essen-Werden (Germany), situated on the Ruhr. The foundation of the abbey Near Essen Saint Ludger founded a monastery in 799 and became its first abbot. The little church which Saint Ludger built here in honor of Saint Stephen was completed in 804 and dedicated by Saint Ludger himself, who had meanwhile become Bishop of Münster. Upon the death of Ludger on 26 March 809, the abbacy of Werden passed by inheritance first to his younger brother Hildigrim I (809–827), then successively to four of his nephews: Gerfried (827–839), Thiadgrim (ruled less than a year), Altfried (839–848), Hildigrim II (849–887). Under Hildigrim I, also Bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne, the new monastery of Helmstedt in the Diocese of Halberstadt was founded from Werden. The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (), abbreviated VRR, is a public transport association (Verkehrsverbund) in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It covers most of the Ruhr area, as well as neighbouring parts of the Lower Rhine region, including Düsseldorf and thus large parts of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation. Duisburg Hauptbahnhof is a railway station in the city of Duisburg in western Germany. It is situated at the meeting point of many important national and international railway lines in the Northwestern Ruhr valley. Lines The station is situated at the northern end of the relatively straight Duisburg to Düsseldorf railway line which has to cope with one of the highest daily loads in continental Europe. This line is slated to be widened to six tracks in the near future. Currently it has four—and in some places five—tracks. Parallel to it to the east is the local line to Duisburg-Wedau, remnant of a relief line to Düsseldorf which only sees a local shuttle service today but is heavily used by freight trains (which usually do not run through the station but bypass it on a freight-only line two miles to the east).
