Mediterraneo
''Mediterraneo'' is a 1991 Italian war comedy-drama film directed by Gabriele Salvatores and written by Enzo Monteleone. The film is set during World War II and concerns a group of Italian soldiers who become stranded on a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, and are left behind by the war. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992. Plot In 1941, one year after Italy joined Germany against the Allies in World War II, a small group of misfit Italian soldiers is sent to a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea for four months of lookout duty. The soldiers include a lieutenant who likes art, a macho sergeant, a ski instructor accompanied by his beloved donkey Silvana, and other quirky people. They are not very good soldiers, but a cross section of average, independent men, who like the Greeks (and the occasional visiting Turk), are Mediterraneans, who greatly resemble the locals in appearance and culture—a catchphrase "One face, one race" occurs throughout the film. ... Diego Abatantuono
Diego Abatantuono (born 20 May 1955) is an Italian cinema and theatre actor, and screenwriter, three-time winner of the Nastro d'Argento. Biography and career Abatantuono was born in Milan to a father of Apulian origin and a mother from Como. The latter worked as wardrober in a Milanese jazz and later cabaret club, ''Derby'', whose owner was Abatantuono's uncle. He started to work at ''Derby'' first in lighting, then as artistic director and later as an actor. His first approach to cinema took place thanks to the comedic group , who brought him with them to audition. Enzo Monteleone (born 13 April 1954 in Padova, Italy) is an Italian film director and screenwriter. Career Enzo Monteleone made his professional debut as a screenwriter with the screenplay of ''Hotel Colonial'', an Italian-American co-production directed by Cinzia TH Torrini, and starring Robert Duvall, John Savage, Rachel Ward and Massimo Troisi. Gabriele Salvatores (born 30 July 1950) is an Italian Academy Award-winning film director and screenwriter. Biography Born in Naples, Salvatores debuted as a theatre director in 1972, founding in Milan the Teatro dell'Elfo, for which he directed several avant-garde pieces until 1989. In that year, he directed his third feature film, ''Marrakech Express'', which was followed in 1990 by '' Turné''. Both films shared a group of actor-friends, including Diego Abatantuono and Fabrizio Bentivoglio, who will be present in many of his later movies. Mario Cecchi Gori (; 21 March 1920, in Florence – 5 November 1993, in Rome) was an Italian film producer and owner of companies. Giuseppe Cederna (born 25 June 1957) is an Italian actor and author. Nino Baragli (1 October 1925 – 29 May 2013) was an Italian film editor with more than 200 film credits. Among his films in English, ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'' (1966) and ''Once Upon a Time in the West'' (1968), both directed by Sergio Leone, are perhaps the best known.
