Medininagar Municipal Corporation is the municipal corporation governing Indian city of Medininagar, India. The corporation is the chief nodal agency for the administration of Medininagar and was established in 2015 by a Special Act, brought by the Government of Jharkhand and first election was held in 2018. Overview The municipal corporation consists of democratically elected members and is headed by the mayor and administers the city's infrastructure and public services. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillors are chosen through direct election by all the voters residing in municipal area for a term of 5 years. In India, a Mayor heads a municipal corporation which governs respective Indian towns and cities. The Mayor of a city is the first citizen of that city. Municipal corporation mechanisms in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. Municipal Commissioner (India)
Every municipal corporation in India is administratively headed by a municipal commissioner, the form of government which is usually granted to a city of more than ten lakhs in population. While a Mayor is elected to serve as the ceremonial head of a municipal corporation, a municipal commissioner is appointed by the state government from the Indian Administrative Service or Provincial Civil Service to head the administrative staff of the municipal corporation, implement the decisions of the corporation, and prepare its annual budget. Medininagar, formerly Daltonganj, is a city municipal corporation in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the headquarters of Palamu division and Palamu district, as well as the subdivision and block of the same name. The city is situated on the banks of the North Koel River. Origin of name The city was named Daltonganj during the British Raj after Irishman Colonel Edward Tuite Dalton (1815–1880), an anthropologist and the commissioner of Chota Nagpur in 1861. The name was changed to Medininagar in 2004 by the State Government of Jharkhand. The former name is still retained in the name of the city's railway station. Palamu district is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state, India. It was formed in 1892. The administrative headquarter of the district is Medininagar (formerly DaltonGanj), situated on the Koel River. It is speculated that the Kharwars, which formerly controlled Rohtas Fort to the north, migrated to the current territory of the district.
