Media-Providence Friends School
Media-Providence Friends School is a Quaker school founded as Media Friends School in Media, Pennsylvania in 1876. History and facilities In 1867 the members of Chester Monthly Meeting in Media, which was later renamed Media Monthly Meeting, started the school over a small stable on Baltimore Pike. Students included non-Friends, as well as members of the orthodox Chester Monthly Meeting and the Hicksite Providence Friends Meeting in Media. At the beginning of the century the Quaker religious meeting moved to 125 West 3rd Street and expanded. The small brick school building was built in 1896 with additions added in 1908 and 1918. Later the school moved into the building on 3rd Street. The west end of the main building was changed in 1935 when space was needed to create three more classrooms. Media is a borough in and the county seat of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is located about west of Philadelphia, the sixth most populous city in the nation with 1.6 million residents as 2020. Hicksite
Elias Hicks (March 19, 1748 – February 27, 1830) was a traveling Quaker minister from Long Island, New York (state), New York. In his ministry he promoted unorthodox doctrines that led to controversy, which caused the second major schism (religion), schism within the Religious Society of Friends (the first caused by George Keith (missionary), George Keith in 1691). Elias Hicks was the older cousin of the painter Edward Hicks. Early life Elias Hicks was born in Hempstead, New York, in 1748, the son of John Hicks (1711–1789) and Martha Hicks (née Smith; 1709–1759), who were farmers. He was a carpenter by trade and in his early twenties he became a Quaker like his father. On January 2, 1771, Hicks married a fellow Quaker, Jemima Seaman, at the Westbury, New York, Westbury Friends meeting house, Meeting House and they had eleven children, only five of whom reached adulthood. Providence Friends Meetinghouse is a Historic Quaker meeting house at 105 North Providence Road in Media, Pennsylvania, Media, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The first mention of the Providence Friends meeting is in 1696 when it was recorded that a meeting will be held "At Thomas Minshall's every First and Fourth day." The meeting was moved from Thomas Minshall's house in 1700 to a log building which was replaced by a stone structure in 1727. In 1753, the previous stone structure was removed and replaced with a larger stone building that stands today.
