Mean Machine Sailing Team
Mean Machine is the name of the yachts and the sailing team owned by Dutch Businessman Peter de Ridder. The team has a core of crewmembers who’ve been with the team for the last 15 years. Alongside de Ridder, at the heart of the Mean Machine team are internationally renowned sailors who also sail in classes such as the America’s Cup or the Volvo Ocean Race; Tom Dodson and Ray Davies from New Zealand, and Briton Jules Salter. History The Mean Machine team starts sailing in 1985 with the Mean Machine one-tonner. Peter de Ridder and an almost entirely amateur team sail into sixth place in the World Championships of the class in the Spanish Island of Mallorca. America’s Cup
The America's Cup, informally known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded in the sport of sailing. It is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy (known as the defender) and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup (the challenger). Matches are held several years apart on dates agreed between the defender and the challenger. There is no fixed schedule, but the races have generally been held every three to four years. The most recent America's Cup match took place in March 2021. Volvo Ocean Race
The Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three or four years since 1973. Originally named the Whitbread Round the World Race after its initiating sponsor, British brewing company Whitbread, in 2001 it became the Volvo Ocean Race after Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo took up the sponsorship, and in 2019 it was renamed The Ocean Race. Though the route changes to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs Europe in October, and in recent editions has had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races at many of the stopover cities. Thomas Ward Dodson (born 17 May 1957) is a sailor from Hastings, New Zealand, who represented his country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States as helmsman in the Soling. With crew members Simon Daubney and Aran Hansen they took the 11th place. Ramon "Ray" Davies is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple Volvo Ocean Races and America's Cups. His career as a professional sailor has lasted over 23 years including 16 years in the Team New Zealand fulfilling a variety of roles like helmsman, designer, strategist and even as the coach of the New Zealand team. Davies was on the second-placed ''Merit Cup'' in the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race. He then sailed with America One in the 2000 Louis Vuitton Cup, before helming the winning ''Illbruck Challenge'' in the 2001–02 Volvo Ocean Race. One Ton Class
One Ton class was an offshore sailing class, which raced for the One Ton Cup, of the RORC 22 foot rule between 1965 and 1970, and then the International Offshore Rule between 1971 and 1994. The IOR rated length was 27.5' from 1971 to 1982, then in order to match the minimum class of the Admiral's Cup, the rated length for the One Ton class increased to 30.55' from 1983 onwards. As well as regional competitions, the class spawned national-level trophies such as the North American One Ton cup. Farr 40
The Farr 40 is a 40-foot one-design sailboat designed by Farr Yacht Design in 1996 following after the Mumm 30. It was originally designed as a one design class but had some compromises in design to rate under the International Measurement System (IMS) rule. The class has held World Sailing class status since 1997. Approximately 140 were built. In 1996, the first Farr 40 One Design was launched at Carroll Marine in Newport, Rhode Island.
