His thought may be classified as personalist, as his writings focused primarily on the nature of human beings. He made contributions in the fields of political science, religion, education, and philosophy in a long career of writing, teaching, and public speaking. After retirement he became a Quaker. Thomas Porter McMurray (5 December 1887, Belfast – 16 November 1949, London) was a British orthopaedic surgeon remembered for describing the McMurray test. Biography Thomas McMurray graduated from Queen's University, Belfast in 1910, and took up a house job in Liverpool under Sir Robert Jones. He served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps in France for a short time, returning to the Alder Hey Military Hospital in Liverpool in 1914. He continued his training under Robert Jones, becoming lecturer at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Liverpool from 1924 to 1938, and succeeding Robert Jones as director of orthopaedics. He became the first professor of orthopaedic surgery in Liverpool in 1938. He was president of the British Orthopaedic Society and the Liverpool Medical Institution, and president-elect of the British Medical Association. Sarah Ann McMurray ( Silcock, 26 August 1848 – 14 September 1943) was a New Zealand woodcarver and craftswoman. Biography McMurray was born in Nelson, New Zealand, on 26 August 1848, the daughter of Susannah Silcock (''née'' Flower) and Captain Simon Bonnet Silcock. McMurray was the third of 14 children. Sarah Page, a prohibitionist, was McMurray's cousin through her mother's sister, Rhoda Saunders (née Flower), who married politician Alfred Saunders. She married Robert McMurray in 1872. They had six children. They lived for some time in dense forest in the Inangahua Valley on the West Coast of the South Island. In the 1880s they moved to a farm in Awahuri in the North Island. Later moving again to Wanganui. She took up relief carving as a hobby and despite being over 50 years old she enrolled in a local technical college to develop her wood carving skills. It appears that Margaret's family had been in possession of it for at least 150 years prior to this, as one 'John McMurray' is in legal records at that time. It is also notable that McMurray's descendants, dropped the 'Mc' from the name, suggesting anglicisation.
