It was the home of Bramley R.L.F.C. from 1965 to 1995. History From the late 19th century Bramley played at the Barley Mow ground. The land adjacent to the ground was owned by Edith McLaren, widow of the managing director of Leeds engineering firm J&H McLaren & Co. Despite several approaches by Bramley, Mrs McLaren would not sell the land to the club but after her death in 1958 she bequeathed the field to the club on condition that any development was named after her. Bramley, West Yorkshire
Bramley is a district in west Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is part of the City of Leeds Ward of Bramley and Stanningley with a population of 21,334 at the 2011 Census. The area is an old industrial area with much 19th century architecture and 20th century council housing in the east and private suburban housing in the west. Etymology The name of Bramley is first attested in the 1086 Domesday Book as ''Brameleia'' and ''Bramelei''. The name derives from the Old English words ''brōm'' ('Broom (shrub), broom') and ''lēah'' ('open land in a wood'). Thus the name once meant 'open land characterised by broom'. History At the time of the Domesday survey, the nucleus of the settlement was probably located at Stocks Hill, and it developed in a linear fashion along today's Town Street. Bramley RLFC was a rugby league club from the Bramley area of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, that folded following the 1999 season. The club is a famous name in rugby league, having existed before the formation of the Northern Union in 1895. The traditional nickname for the club was 'the Villagers'. Bramley Rugby League Community Club aka Bramley Buffaloes was formed by the fans of the former club with the desire to return to the professional ranks as quickly as possible, continuing the Bramley name, traditions and history. However, The RFL denied the Buffaloes applications twice while admitting other clubs. The second bid was unsuccessful after The RFL changed the application process after the submission date. Barley Mow was a former home ground of the Bramley rugby league club in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Wales to its west and Scotland to its north. The Irish Sea lies northwest and the Celtic Sea to the southwest. In 1907 Barley Mow became the first ground to stage a club match against the touring New Zealanders. In 2007, a blue plaque was added to the Barley Mow pub to mark the anniversary of the tour match. In the 1960s, the club moved to a new ground on adjacent land, which became known as McLaren Field. In 1995, the stadium at MacLaren Field had safety problems that Bramley could not afford to implement and it was demolished to be replaced with housing.
